Buddy of mine has a 3rd gen (I think an 05) its got the 48 trans and he has the same problem I had a few weeks back with mine. Starts in 2nd won't downshift to low.

I told him to post here, he's not a member yet and will try to get on board tonight (last night - 3/31/10). Anyway, I told him I thought it might be the gov sensor and solenoid and that someone more familiar w/the 48s would know for sure.

Lou - here's where I got my parts from - the link is for the 48 trans A618 48RE transmission solenoids, TransmissionpartsUSA.com top two parts + 2nd day shipping should get it to you Friday - if you order on-line tonight.

Hope that's all it is.

Update - Buddy stopped by today said he took to dealer and they told him it was the Throttle, ECM and PCM told him it would cost 12k. Then he tells me its working fine most of the time, except when you come to a stop, he has to pop in N or it stalls???

That sounds like either a TC problem or an FCA problem, hard to tell.

Definitely th edealer is throwing the common parts at it and not even trying diagnosing, $12k off the top of their heads!!!!

Either desperately needing work or desperatley stupid.

I've told my friend Lou to call DTT or one of the other big outfits and get on TDR, do something. I guess he's more inclined to drive into a shop and take his chances.

I'm done on this post - he'll figure it out somehow? I tried . . .

Thanks for reply. I was more curious than anything else to see what the deal is w/his trans acting as it does @ 50k miles.

Prairie - I agree totally. Typical of some dealers, but sad as it gives a bad rep to those that are good.

cerberusiam - That was my thought too. When I was a kid I had a hot rod that you couldn't stop without putting in N. Was the TQ. Agree w/Dealer comment as well. I keep telling him the dealer he's going to doesn't have a Certified Diesel Tech (not that it should matter for the trans) and recommending a dealer maybe 10 miles further that has shop open 24 hours M - F and 16 hours Sat & Sun "and" has Certified Diesel Tech on-duty whenever the shop is open, but ? ? ?
