Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Pyro question

My low beams have been working intermittently since yesterday. Doing a forum search I see that it is probably the multifunction switch (ie. high /low switch). I also see a lot of posts of guys adding a Summit Racing harness (Part # SUM-890030) so as to add a relay and take the current load off of the headlight switch. My question is: Is this harness also needed on a 2002?. Reading my service manual on Lamps/Lighting it describes a headlamp relay in the Power Distribution Center leading me to believe that this harness is not needed for my 2002.

Thanks,

JRC

The only relays used in the front lighting of model year 2002 Ram 2500's are one used as an interlock in the fog lamp circuit (prevents fogs on with high beams) & one used for the inboard (9007) high beam filaments on Sport models. Model year 2002 second-generation Ram front lamp wiring is no different than model years 1999-2001.

As you've mentioned, the multi-function switch is likely the problem. Be aware that a few TDR members have reported that adjusting the tilt steering wheel through its range of positions has loosened wiring at the switch, something to check first.

I installed the summit headlight relay wiring harness in mine because my headlights did not seem bright enough to me. The stock wiring uses thin gauge wiring. The summit harness made a noticeable difference in the brightness especially when driving around areas with deer at night. In addition to taking the power directly from the batteries though the relay to the headlights that the harness used heavier gauge wiring than the stock harness. I also would suspect the switch or wiring in the tilt area, but the harness would take some of the load off the stock circuitry.

I put the Summit in mine (2002) to help cool down the headlight switch with less than full bright panel lights. Did just that. GOOD MOD! Simple.

I took apart the steering column anf founf the wire to low beam had broke at the connector and was only partially making contact at the upward most tilt position. I have also ordered the Summit HArness and will be installing it as soon as it arrives.
