It has been demonstrated time and time again that most of the TDR members tend to be very mechanically minded. Thus the reason for this question. I went to adjust my idle speed up yesterday and for the life of me, could not even see the adjustment screw, much less make an adjustment. I know it is located on the back of the pump, but what in the heck do I have to do to get to the adjustment screw? Looks to me like either the wheel well needs to come off or the brake booster. This one rates right up there with the location of the fuel filter (mines a 95). Thanks

You're right, the adjuster is hard to see. My recommendation is to use a good flashlight to help with the search, shine it on the lower half of the injection pump, in the area behind the fuel shutoff solenoid, now work the throttle linkage and you'll see a 10mm bolt head that part of the linkage is hitting. It's at the very back of the pump on the lower half.

It takes 2, 10mm wrenches, one to loosen the lock nut on the bottom and one to the turn the bolt on the top.

Someone may post a picture which is what really helps.

Good luck,

Ronnie

I do the adjustment with one 10mm box end wrench. You really have to do it by feel because you can't look at it and get your hands on it at the same time. Loosen the lock nut and you should be able to turn the adjustment screw by hand. I jam a scewdriver in the linkage mess on the side of the pump so that the lever is off the lock screw. This makes it easy to turn the adjustment screw by hand. There is a picture and detailed instructions at:

Its a good idea to use a mirrow to look the situation over before you start cause its the only way you're going to see it. Like the other fellow said, jam the throttle open will help. Maybe because I have the four wheel abs controller, but I needed another joint between the wrist and elbo!

MBarnett, The joint between the elbow and wrist statement reminded me of an old co-worker. I was working as a maintenance machinist at a baked goods plant and Jerry was my partner, he had sustained an injury years prior that left his forearm with a definate arc. Jerry could always reach that impossible bolt with "frank", yeah he called that arm frank for frankenstein. He did not seem bugged by it but rather considered it another tool.

Thanks to each of you. It's a great help. A mirror , flashlight, 10mm wrench, screwdriver are next in line for earning their keep. Just wish I had a Frank I could put in the tool box when not in use.

no-stroke, I just did an idle adjust for the first time yesterday. I used the diagram on the link above, then found it very easily while standing on a 5-gallon bucket by the drivers wheel. Method? get on the bucket while wearing a ball cap. Lean in under the hood and put the back of your head against the hood insulation (thus, the hat!), and reach your right hand under the brake master AND under the ABS lines to the back of the pump. You can easily feel a verticle bolt with the extra threads on the bottom. As you can see in the drawing, that bolt goes thru a sleeve sticking out the back of the pump... that is how I distinguished it from all the other stuff in there. I was able to get a closed-end wrench on it, 10mm... . very simple stuff! Have fun.
