CRC Diesel Bio-Con?

I have about 2500 miles on the truck now, about 2000 highway no load, 300 city streets, and 200 pulling a 5000 pound TT. The truck is getting pretty pathetic fuel ecomomy, and I get a diesel smell when I get off the freeway and start running at city street speeds, or when I first start it cold. Just a whif, and just for a short time usually, and it is not exhaust - it is raw fuel smell.

I have had it in to a dealer, and called two other dealers, and am getting very little help with the problems so far. They initially said the diesel smell was common even with gas new vehicles, because of some engine coatings that need to burn off. Ok, but 2500 miles later? And when I get off the freeway or start it cold, and not when the engine if running warm?

My mileage is somewhat variable depending on how I am driving, but I am a steady driver that uses the cruise control a lot. These are calculated, not based on the trip computer. What I have experienced so far is about 17 highway at 65 mph, about 16 in city driving, and the last tank with most of the Travel Trailer towing was only 13. 7 mostly driving about 50 mph!

Other than bring it back to the dealer and hope they know what to look for, does anyone have some suggestions? I have not been impressed with the dealer Service Manager's anywhere, so if I can come in with some ideas for them to rule out, it may help.

For the economy issue, I understand an injector timing setting can be a big factor. For the smell, I have looked for leaks and can't find anything under the hood at idle. Perhaps it has to be pumping up to pressure, and exceeding the engine demand, to produce the problem. Any ideas on where to look will be appreciated. Thanks.

DBVZ, there's some upcoming BOMB events that you could come to and someone could give your truck a good looking-over. Check out NW BOMBers Website for more info. There's planned around the Arlington area in April :)

Also if you want to wander down the road thru Black Diamond and on to Rob Hanson's place I'm sure he'd be happy to meet you and spec out your truck.

mpg seems normal to me.

when you were towing, did the truck feel like it had power? were u able to climb any hills without losing any significant mileage or power? if so, odds are your injector timing is probably ok. your mileage seems ok, and even on the higher side of normal given from your signature, your driving a dually 4x4.

with regards to the smell, check your blowby vent bottle and see if it is full. these trucks can suck in odors from a mile away. when i use my windsheild washer fluid, if it is hot, the smell gets sucked in right away. Fresh oil changes also create diesel like odors for a week or two, then go away.

some of these things are easily remedied.

nature of the beast i guess.

gotta go.

Your fuel mileage is about right for your truck and miles. I'm not sure if the 03's have the breather baby bottle. I had heard somewhere that they have been removed and the breather tube is back where fumes can get in cab. The last TDR issue talked about this. Find the breather tube and possibly extend it to the rear of the vehicle. I plumbed mine rearward into a pvc overflow bottle I made to run on the drag strip. No more driveway drips. :D

Mr. Plow,

Power was fine climbing. Maintained 60 in 3rd (direct drive) at about 2400 rpm up a long grade that was 5 or 6%, but the mpg dropped to about 8 for that stretch. (at idle downhill the computer hits 99 mpg) The comments seem to say my mpg is normal. I guess some of the comments here about 20+ mpg had me expecting more from the latest greatest CTD. So where do I look for this breather hose? Right/left, front/back, looks like? This isn't the drain for the fuel/water seperator is it? Thanks for the help. I would like to hear from others with an HO/48re/DRW, to confirm the MPG is normal.

I don't have the dually but my mpg is averaging 17. 3 empty. Remember your not going to get as good mpg with an auto as the manual guys. My last truck was a dually with 47RE and I got 17. 5. Also it takes a while for these engines to break in. With 2500 miles even towing 5000 lbs I don't think your engine is broke in. I have 2300 miles on mine and I expect to get better with more miles but if I don't I'm satisfied with what I'm getting now. Yours seem normal to me.

My truck with 1400 miles last tank was 12. 7 mpg "calculated". The overhead computer reads 13. 4 to 14. 7, all empty. My best tank calculated is 14. 4 best, worst, 12. 2. All town/highway driving.

I, personally never expect to get much more than 17 calculated on my '03 HO 3500 SRW 4x4 48RE. It's a HEAVY truck and sets up high. Conservative driving habits can greatly effect milage. I'm not conservative, but I'm not jack rabbit starting ALL the time, either. I do REALLY like the '03 power, 48RE, et al. According to the TDR membership packet, the auto's get at least 1 mpg less than the sticks, and that may be a bit optimistic.

I'll be happy if the milage on my '03 averages as good as my '01 town/highway empty, 14. 5 to 17, and that's the milage range I expected when I bought the truck after, say after it breaks in, say 10k or 45k depending upon how much towing I do. That's still better than the 6 to 12 mpg's (empty) that people I know who drive the other two brand diesels and they weigh less, tow less.

My '01 SO 5 spd. 4x4 3. 54 gears NEVER got over 17-18 highway empty, <65 mph. Towing 9 to 13 mpg, 12k. I did have size 285 mud (Goodyear MTR) tires. My '96 V-10 2500 4x4 47RE best was 10-11 mpg, empty. 6 towing 12K.

Sure the milage may hurt, but it's a BIG truck and I figure the price of petrol will be coming down this summer. Ahhhhh the days of 89 cent diesel!!

Iffn I recalls

the vent for the crankcase is on the drivers side just in front of the fuel filter. You can see it from underneath, like the old (50/60's) vent. A tube pointed down to the road and about 6" short of the bottom of the oil pan. Just going by some of my look-see's at the ste... (oops) dealer. Have found the 3 pin connection for the QC2 and its just in front of the filter & tube on the drivers side. Had to "dig" for it but its about halfway back from the front.

These were just my memories so they may be off some (but at least on the correct side to look) .

Da Diesel-less SOTSU!!

Yes it's true, the 03's are off the bottle. Anybody out there have a spare one laying around? I hate to but one from the d-d-d-dealer (see Big Mack, I was good ;) )

This is getting worse. The last tank was just under 13 mpg, and the computer is now showing 11-12 mpg most of the time. It went to the dealer today, and the service guy agrees the diesel smell we get in the cab is NOT normal. They get it again tomorrow to keep until they find the problem, and when they do I will report what was found.

Just for the heck of it check your oil. Does it smell like diesel? Could a leaking injector or connection to the injector cause fuel to leak into the oil. That would certainly account for the smell but I would think it would definitely be showing high on the dipstick if it was leaking into the crankcase in sufficient amounts to cause a decrease in mileage. Just a thought.

Casey

In reference to the location of the breather tube. It is located on the back side of the block (drivers Side). If you crawl under your truck you will see it hanging down besides the starter. It is a 1" black plastic tube.

Lynn

Casey, unlike our DMax and PSD counterparts, there's no conceivable way for fuel to get into the oil on the Cummins. If there is a fuel leak between the injector line and tube going to the injector, it will leak outside the engine. If there's a leak where the tube connects to the injector under the valve cover, the fuel dribbles harmlessly away down the fuel return channel. Just another thing to add to the beauty of the Cummins TD ;)

mine stank for the first 2500 miles or so... after a really good pull (14k and 90 degree weather) the smell went away... there is a clear coat that is sprayed over the motor and once it burned off the exhaust manifold it smells GREATOo. ... as far as the mileage goes... thats about right... I have 3100 miles and get 17 highway and 15 around town 10-12 pullin my toy hauler and Jeep inside... it should get better as the miles pile up!!. . i HOPE!!!

I have noticed that the exhaust smell is not as strong with the G3's as it was with my 12valve & 24valve G2's. Is there something wrong with my sniffer or has anyone else noticed this?

Dean

Dean,

If you mean the smell coming from the exhaust pipe is a little less "dieselly", I would agree. However, the 2003 gets exhaust fumes in the cab much easier (like when backing out of my drive) than my 2001 did. It's done it from day one. But I've gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me. The wife still mentions it at times though, but I think she's still upset cause I traded trucks and trying to find something to gig me about. She liked the old cummins sound better.

Boonieman,

Yes, I did mean the exhaust smell or lack of it. I have not noticed any fuel or exhaust smell in the cab at all. I liked the sound of my old truck better, but I miss it like a toothache. I have really gotten to like the quietness of this truck and just about everything else about it. Nice job, D/C and Cummins:D :D .
