Low Speed Surge '03 Dodge

I have a 2003 dodge ¾ ton 4x4 HO with 48RE trans running 5" exhaust and an Edge EZ at setting position 4. She has run like a champ! Until about two weeks ago I noticed a surge at low speeds 10-20 mph it almost feels like the trans is slipping or shifting form 1st to 2nd and the back to 1st rapidly. I have also noticed that when cold it feels like something is holding the transmission back, it has a heavy lag and then it will engage.

I just replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the air filter and no change. I have removed the Edge EZ and the problem is still present just not as aggressive. The dealer says the trans is fine.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Gkehl, Welcome to the TDR.

I too have an occasional erratic 1-2 shift and have found that it occurs mostly under light acceleration. As the truck makes the 1-2 up-shift it seems like halfway through the shift it returns to 1st gear for a bit then up-shifts back to 2nd, almost like the truck was not sure if it was ready to make the shift yet. As I recall my 03's did the same thing so I am not overly alarmed. As a solution I just accelerate quicker and the shifts are fine.

Also, I am unsure if this is the same condition that your describing but I have felt a loss in power recently. It's like I am dragging an anchor around. I attribute this to the winter blend fuel that is now at the pumps in my area. Again, my 03's did the same thing.
