I just got the latest edition of the TDR Magazine & read part of a story (Idle Clatter- old trucks-new fuel, pg. 103) about possible compatibility problems with the older CTD's fuel systems. I've read in earlier editions of the TDR that this ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) has been on the west coast for about a year now. Has any of our TDR brothers or sisters had any problems with this new fuel that us east coast members should know about?

Is this ULSD going to wreak havoc with my mechanical fuel pump? Am I worrying for nothing?

well if i understand it right cali has had ulsd for sometime. ive lived there for 18 years and we run a dodge, 2 fords, and an old tractor and have never had problems w/ the fuel. so i would say that its not as bad as everyone says. my understanding is that they have to replace the lubricating properties after removing the sulfer but i could be wrong about that

There was a good write up posted in the TDR forums earlier this year on some tests that showed that adding 1-2% biodiesel to almost anything (kerosene, #2, JP8) would bring the lubricity back into spec.

If you're concerned, I'd recommend getting a couple of 5-10gal fuel containers at Wal-Mart - filling them with bioD from a local commercial source - and adding a gallon or two with each fill up.

Do that and you need not worry at all. It will give you time to watch and see if problems develop after the switch to ULSD this summer.

I'm hoping there is someone out there on the left coast of TDR Land who has used the new ULSD and can give us east coasters some advice... if any is needed.
