Can someone give me some insight. Friend borrowed my 97 3500 to tow his 14k 5th wheel and noticed that my temp guage never went over 175 degrees. He says this could be my problem with sluggish power saying the fan never locks up. He is a mechanic and I trust his judgement but want a second opinion. I am going to check it out tomorrow to see if it is locking up or not. I have noticed that the temp guage never gets over 190. Is this normal and can it deplete power. No mods in engine.

That's normal temp on my '98. Even towing, with the minor mods mine has the gauge almost never has gotten above 190. The '06 is a differnt story.

Your thermostat may be stuck open. There is a rubber cover on it that is prone to slipping and jamming it open. It should go up to 190 before it opens even just running down the road with no load.
