This was what someone sent to me when I questioned how to change a front axel seal. It should be helpful since you have to remove the steering knuckle (ball joints) to get at the seal. Hope this helps http://dieselpowerman.tripod.com/Front Axle Tech/Front Axle Tech.htm

It's not hard, just be careful when pullling the axle shaft as to not damage the seal. You will also need a ball joint press and adapters to press it in\out. Most auto parts stores will lend or rent this tool.

Pull the wheel and caliper, undo axle shaft nut, remove wheel brg assy bolts from behind knuckle, remove bearing, rotor assy, and axle shaft, then unbolt ball joint and remove knuckle. You can then press out the joints, and reverse process to reinstall. I would recommend Moog for the replacement joint.

Do a search,as there are lots of good tips on the axle shaft nuts, siezed bearings, axle seals etc.

I strongly recommend doing the upper ball join ant the U-joint on that side while it is appart. The hard part is getting the wheel bearing out of the hub and getting the ball joints seperated from the axle.

Once you get that far, you can drive the old ball joints out of the knuckle with a large hammer. Get the new parts from NAPA, ask for the Dana/Spicer parts. They will probably have to order them but they come with grease zirks. Install straight zirks (the ones that come with will hit the U-joint). The NAPA I go to had a grease tool that will fit in and allow lubrication. It slides onto the zirk from the side.
