I just returned from a 4000 mile roadtrip into the northwest. Prior to leaving I removed the big Mopar upgrade steering box because I was not impressed. I had Redhead rebuild my old 2012 Redhead box (smaller Mopar) I had on the shelf and mod the valve to make the steering easier. I replaced the pump w/ a new OEM one. I had an issue for years that on trips, the steering would stiffen up which annoyed me to no end. It did it w/ steering box changes and pump changes. I can't tell you why it stopped but it did w/ these latest changes. Steering is better than ever, smooth and easy (If you have followed my steering gripes over the years, I have probably said this before.)

So back to the title. On my trip, I noticed a little slop in the steering (about 1/2") and I have a thing about that. I tracked it down to the lower shaft where the splines attach to the splined nub on the steering box. I replaced the pinch bolt with a high strength bolt and nut and tightened the hell out of it. I still have a little movement/slop at the connection and I think the splines on the lower shaft have been wallowed out a little.
Anybody deal w/ replacing the lower shaft before?
Looks like the part number is 55351444AD. Some sources say that due to engineering change, the intermediate or upper needs to be changed also. Anybody been down this road recently?

Looks like the part number I listed is for the superceded part. I don't want to replace the whole thing.
I found the replacement part (lower part of shaft) I need: 55351456AF

I installed the part today. Not too bad if you remove the driver side wheel well liner. The clamp end was beefed up considerably on the new part. The old part's splines were wallowed out. The new part works great and fits tight. No more slop!
