My truck has givin me fits since it was new, When it gets cold out like 0+ to 30, it's a crap shoot as if it will start, not plugged in, also my truck will sit for several days before it's used. I would like to get a diesel again, but one that will start for me.

? If you let your Dodge Cummins truck sit for say 24hr at what temp will it start at reliably, with out being plugged in???

Thanks

Paul

Mine isn't a 3rd gen but there shouldn't be any difference in the cold start ability. I've started mine down to minus 30 on a hunting trip not plugged in and it had been sitting for 2 days. Started right up - chugged for a bit but no problem starting. A friend had a 99 PSD there that we had been using because it was a crew cab and had more room for the crew - it wouldn't start that morning so we jumped in mine.

I own an 2000 F550 that we've spent a lot trying to get it to start... . The dealer says its low on compression... Yet it runs fine and has lots of power and doesn't use oil or smoke... at below 40 we plug it in for the night and that's the only way we can fix it...

I've put several tell tale bulbs on the system... glow plug circuit, hot air grid. . etc... they all seem to work but the truck won't start cold... .

I own 6 trucks... my old Ford pre power stroke starts as good as my dodges... buy the dodges and don't look back... BTW at -20 F my 01 always starts..... as well as the rest of the Dodges... .

Started @ -18 yesterday morning after setting about 12 hrs.

Didn't even turn over a complete revolutions it seemed!

This is with the '04 HO w/930 miles.

10 below and mine fired with one cycle of the grid heater. Blew some white smoke for a bit, but was far from hard to start.

I had a friend tell me yesterday that his brothers '04 Cummins wouldnt start at -22*, he did point out that his own LLY duramax fired right up no problem. I have started my '99 at 12* without cycling the heaters and -15 not plugged in and a single heater cycle.

I have started mine at -40 more than once. I run 0-40 synthetic oil in the winter which helps alot too. I see that Dodge/Cummins advertize a cold start ability down to -20. I think that is very conservitave.

it sounds like you have something going on with your truck!!

mine starts as low as -45 on skidoo trips all winter long and not plugged in and it sits for a least 2 days every weekend

that truck should start with no problem

its time to see a CTD doctor :-laf

Thanks for all the replys, I am looking at replacing my Ford with a Dodge Cummins with an auto, My wife and I both love the truck, my wife said ,this is a diesel??? it's so quiet, but I, was scared of another diesel that is not dependable, When I ordered my first diesel 99 Ford ps the brosure said it would start to -20 but when the next brosure came out that remark was missing? wounder why? I just want something that will pull all my trailers, be a weekend driver, and start above 0* I normaly plug it in if it's below 10* out and it starts right up, but now I must plan when to go and plug it in for at least 2-3hrs before, Have been thinking of going back to gaser, but I like the Cummins power, Well try to get this one going again, Till I order a new one.
