Well, had some slow time at work tonight and got around to checking fuel PSI (off the clock of course;) ). Looks like my orriginal LP (102000mls) is finaly on it's way out, only had 8psi at idle and 2-4 at 3000rpm no load. No codes so I'm crossing fingers and toes that VP is OK. Question is does it matter if I get one at Cummins or DC, are they the same? Best place to pick one up in Western Washington? Other than a crank sensor and normal maint haven't touched the engine, love it. Thanks.

There is a good chance that going down the road with the engine under a slight load you may not have any pressure so I would suggest getting the lift pump changed real soon. As for where to get a new one, at Cummins they are $148, at Dodge they come in a Cummins box with a chrysler sticker over the Cummins part number and cost $350. When my lift pump went kaput at less than 30,000 miles it acted just like yours and when I went down the road I had zero pressure and I have no idea how long it was like that. My VP is still going strong at 86,000 miles.

CPjMech,

I am of the opinion that as long as your LP provides positive pressure to the VP44 at all times, you probably haven't hurt it. From your signature I see you have guages, but guess you don't have a fuel pressure guage for this is your first time checking it. If it were me I would install one so as to monitor pressure and watch for indications of LP failure. I have read on this site where some guys have installed bad pumps right out of the box. Run a check on your pressure even though a new pump is installed.

As for a place to purchase... NW Cummins in Renton can help you out.

Got a new lift pump from VFI (Cummins NW was out of them) for the same price and delivered to my shop. Installed and checked PSI, much better. 15 idle and 10 at full load. Also was a perfect time to install the Geno's bango bolts I've had sitting around and change the fuel filter. Much easier to change LP than I thought it would be, only 45min for my first change. Idle is much smoother now and seems to have better throttle response. Hope this one lasts as long as the original.

Make sure you use dielectric grease on the pin connector of the LP. Gary has found some ''bad'' LP's to be good ones once they are greased. This could explain ''new pumps not performing''
