Yeah, I know not a Cummins. But one of the project/drivers needed a little limbering up and a 1300 mile round trip to Luckenbach Texas seemed to be just the ticket. The good news is the 66 year old Chevy 3/4 ton made the trip with no problems. Of course we stuck to two lane as much as possible since 55 is the fast happy speed. This is the first real road trip in the 51 and it was a blast. Many Many thumbs up with zero middle finger waves.

We stayed at the Full Moon B&B which is only a 1/4 mile or so from Luckenbach. Important detail is that 1/4 mile away deal, especially after an afternoon of enjoying the music and Lone Stars.

The excuse for this trip was to see the bluebonnets and Indian paint brush in full bloom and they were pretty magnificent. But the music beer and adventure was the real reason for the trip and they were all definitely up to expectations, I don't listen to new country and it sure is nice to hear the good (real) stuff live while sitting under a tree with a cold one.

To cap things off, as we were leaving for home we decided to run back by Luckenbach and park the old truck in front of the post office for pictures. When we got there a video was about to be shot and we were invited to stand in, we were given a couple red Luckenbach bandannas from the store/Post Office and sang along with the group (me totally out of tune). Then for the photo shoot the truck was the center piece for all the Luckenbach folks to pose around and stand in the bed. For that a gratis Luckenbach sign was added to the headache rack.

Sometimes one just needs to let those hair brained wild hairs have there run. This one sure worked out.

Next trip, Nashville Tn.

That's a great "Mrs" that would ride in a neat old truck like that on a trip. First thing I thought when I saw that it was a 3/4 ton was, "I'll bet that was a slow ride".
My wife of 40 years when we were dating in the early '70's would go with me all over in my 1939 willys pickup. Topped out at about 45-50 mph, has cable brakes and all the heat and fumes you wanted coming through the floor boards. Still have the Mrs and still have the truck.

Motorhead, you are absolutely right on a "Great Mrs." 44 years she's been copilot in a wild assortment of (probably unsafe) cool, old odd ball rigs.

The 51 still has the original 4.57 rear gear, but I changed out the original sm420 transmission with its 7.05 1st gear for a T5 from a S10. The T5 has a .72 5th which gives a cruising speed of 55 to 60. I am on the hunt for a HO52 differential from a 67 to 72 V8, auto K20 Chevrolet or GMC since it'll have 4.10s.

But Man, you need to get that 1939 Willys out into the light of day, turn a few wrenchs, spend a few bucks and start enjoying it. NICE TRUCK!
