I have been having rough shifts for the last week & ordered a Southbend hydraulic unit thinking my problem was in the slave cylinder/master cylinder. I got under my truck today to change the slave cylinder with the new unit & noticed pieces of springs sticking out the bellhousing. It was bad news for me! The Luk cerametallic clutch only lasted me 40k miles. I am going to order a Southbend FE & jump on the bandwagon with you guys.

Cummins724,

Make sure you talk with Peter before you order, he will tell you whether that is enough clutch or not. Me, I don't think so with your mods, and IF you add more... You really need a DD.

Godspeed,
Trent

The FE has been holding just great for me so far. It is for sale in the classifieds right now. I'll make you a great deal on it. Upgrading to a dual disk setup before I start sledpullin' ...

I'm Still on My FE ! Its doing a Good Job :D For 619 + its holding pretty well!
I didnt make it 3 weeks and 400 miles on a luk clutch! I agree, if your wanting to do it right, Go ahead and double disc! Is it needed? , No but you'll get more life from the clutch if you go double disc!

I was going to get the DD, but a few guys told me that it is gonna be "jumpy" when pulling heavy as I do [15k]. I just wanna do it right & be done with it. I have 4000 miles on my new engine/ trans. & figure If I do it right... . should be a new truck again.

I called SB today & Peter wasn't in the office... . I spoke with Woody & he recommended a DD for my setup. I need to get er' on the road..... any dealers wanna deal? Best price gets my business. :-laf

YUP - that's a lot of mods for the LUK - especially if you push it with aggressive driving - and lets face it, for most guys, that's the REASON for power mods! ;) :-laf

Peter at SBC will have something that will fit your needs and power level - OH, and try to get back to us with info on what your flywheel looks like when you get into swapping clutches...

+1 on what gary said

(yours lasted longer than mine)

Anyone running a SB DD3850... . I'd appreciate some knowledge on the overall driveability of this clutch.

every day... its great towed a boat with it the other day. when you take off with a load use the granny gear or bring the revs up to about 1k and then let it out... a slight bit of slipping like that isnt abusive to it because its really just a split second, and its smooth as can be.

BTW this clutch takes alot of abuse and keeps on keeping on!!!!!!!!

I've got a little over 400 miles on my new DD3600 and I couldn't be happier.

It dosn't have the "rattle" that I've always associted with a DD clutch.

Also the pedal pressure is hardly any more than I had running the FE.

I havn't towed anything with it yet but driving empty the engagement is beautiful! I can start in 2nd without any shudder or jerking.

I drove a truck with a DD 3850 Comp 12 FB in it and there is NO comparison.

The 3850 holds like no other I just wouldn't want to daily drive it.

when you are in gear/running down the road there is no extra noise that i notice. but when you push the clutch in, and sit at a red light holding it in rather than put the truck in neutral... you get the rattle/scraping sound of the disks just barely rubbing the center plate.

its not loud enough to bother you, but loud enough you can hear it. ill see if i can get a video on my digital camera of the sounds when i go to lunch

From what I understand the noise was taken out with the new configuration, and it takes less pressure to engage.

J. Keith,

Are you comparing a 3600 12CB to a 3850 12FB? If so the plate load is not the difference it is the friction material. Feramic grabs NOW. Ceramic will slip a little.

Godspeed,
Trent

Well... . talked to Peter today & he recommended a DD 3250 NV4500 1 1/4" spline for my application. He said that it will feel like a stock clutch pedal, but hold whatever I throw at it. He says the new clutch design is quiet, but strong. Anyone running this clutch? I didn't know that SB had a Dual disc with a 1 1/4" spline..... no need for upgrading the shaft. He said that they only recommend changing the shaft to guys that sled pull every weekend now.
