I was driving my 05 the other day and heard a loud pop and felt something hit my lower back... Not a bullet, but the knob from my lumbar support adjuster...

Any one else had this happen? I'm a little over 36k, so the timing is not good. Any TSB's on this? I have never heard of this before??

It's the "lumbar-support" mechanism. Made entirely of plastic, which breaks easily and usually without provocation or warning.

Mine broke 2 years ago and they fixed it on warranty... had to replace the entire seat-back... and they had to remove the seat from the truck to do the repair. It broke again last month and now I'm out of warranty. I went to the service-writer and it will cost over $750 to fix it... AGAIN! :{ In the meantime... no "lumbar" support... gotta use a little pillow. I'm going to buy the seat-back from the parts dept. for $158 and do it myself... save the labor $ for better things.

Guys! DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN YOUR LUMBAR SUPPORT DIAL! In fact... don't sit back into the seat-back when adjusting it... lean forward (with the truck in "park" of course... not while whizzing down the freeway. . dodging dodges-n-doggies... ) to take the weight off the mechanism. Lesson learned the $-way!

Not to cut in... . I just put some of those seat covers on my truck that Geno's sells. NICE covers. They have a cut-out for the lumbar knob. Can you tell me how the knob comes off to get it through the seat cover? Thanks, Chris

I don't really know. Both times it has broken, it just falls off on the floor. Looking at it... I can't tell because I think there are pieces-parts missing. If I was to guess... it looks like the knob is a friction-fit over a plastic shaft with external threads. Try hooking your fingers over the edge of the knob and gently pull outward to see if it slides off. There are no "apparant" mechanical fatseners... no screws... no clips... It just looks like it's a friction fit unless I'm missing a part somewhere.

Motorhead.

It should just pull off, friction fit I believe, rock it back and forth gently as you pull on it. If it fits too tightly against your seat covers you can get extensions at RV dealers like Camping World outlets.

Yep, same on my 04. 5... they replaced the seatback under warranty.
