Mach 3s at altitude-Edited original post!!!!

First off, I searched and can't find a specific answer.

Second, I don't tow. Doesn't mean I won't, but at this time I do not.

Third, I am anywhere from 5000-9000 feet depending on where I am going. Denver to Colorado Springs to weekend mountain trips.

Would Mach 3s be too hot for me, or smoke too much. Injectors are going to be AFTER clutch and exhaust (already have a BHAF) so airflow won't be a problem.

So, could I get by on the 3s, at these altitudes, without going to a bigger turbo just yet? Or would it be best to do turbo and injectors all at once? Thanks!

EDIT: Ok, so, after clutch and exhaust (damn, clutches can be expensive) would I be better off going to a hybrid or 40 size, using just my box and stock injectors? It would clean up the smoke and burn the fuel a lot better, then later I could add 2s or 3s for more oomph, as long as EGTs and such are maintained. Possible? Better solution?

At less than WOT, my Mach 3's actually run a little cooler & smoked less than the 300 marines.

I'm @ 4500' to 5200' every day.

Nick -

I can't speak for the 3's but with a COMP and DD1s I get very hot very fast at 7200+ feet with the HX35 (stock. ) I would bet that you can not use the stock turbo with Mach 3s at our altitude and fully use/appreciate the HP.

Good luck and let us know what you do,

Jason

I still run the stock turbo on my set-up, and so far the highest egt's I've seen is 1200*, but my elevation is only 1300 ft.

At your altitude you'll need to run something like a Kwikspool B-1 just to keep up with some smaller Mach 2's and your Blue Chip box. Also, the Mach 3's aren't recommended for towing.

Boyd.

Thanks guys!

Ok, either I do both injectors and a turbo, but lets say I go ahead and get the injectors, and leave the box OFF, running ONLY injectors until I get more turbo??

Will that work?

Hey Nick, this is just my opinion but unless you get a "cant walk away deal" on any injectors I would do the turbo first. My 3's arent EDM so they will run a little hotter than the EDM 3's based on what i have read but even when I had my 3's and a stock HX35 on the truck (box off) she'd run pretty toasty over the hills on I-70. Multiple times I had to back out of it to keep her happy going over Eisenhower unladen. Even with the box off on the hills you could leave a light stream of smoke, turn the box on and boy can you make a smoke bomb!!!! For Colorado Altitude I cant speak highly enough for the Hybrid like I am running, it was greatness!! Out here she just aint big enough though! :{

Which hybrid are you running? I am looking for a PDR40 or hybrid that can be used as one of some twins. Should I just get the HX40 or go ahead and get a hybrid?? Any suggestions?

12 Valve motors I really dont know a whole bunch about but I have the HTT Stage 3 Turbo with the 63mm wheel and the 16cm non wastegated housing. I really thought back in Colorado this turbo spooled every bit as good as the HX35 12cm 2 I had in the truck prior. I'd say for where I was at power wise back in Colorado I couldn't have done to much better on a matched turbo and not spend a fortune doing it.

I'd have to agree with everyone on here nick. I went with the EDM 2's even though mine is the HO, it was hot with the stock turbo and box off. Running up I-70 I could hit 1400 egts real easy without feathering the go pedal. I can't even imagine EDM 3's.

Oh I like to imagine them alot!!!! JK :D Actually I like to imagine 7's or 8's :D Oo.

I think the consensus is a bigger turbo (or turbos :D ) That FMS is one serious pumper of fuel, I think more so then a comp box or drag comp. She runs hot but boy can they make some power!!!

Thanks guys, appreciate it. Kind of a catch-22. I wouldn't know where to go without your guys' advice, then again I wouldn't even know about BOMBing Cummins without you guys, but I am not complaining!

Ok, so I think I will concentrate on clutch and some 5" pipe, then maybe a hybrid and some 3s!

Nick, I am a little bias and have not run the 40 but I am a big proponent of the hybrid for your altitude, it served me well. As for EGT's, with the Hybrid w/ 16cm housing like I have I would venture to bet you couldnt break 1100 with your stock injectors and the FMS. I am trying to remember for certain but back I believe when I lived in the Mile High state I couldnt break 1450 with my 3's and FMS and this turbo w/ exhaust, swish in a little water Meth and you can run all day wide open. I dont really know how much if any more at all air a straight 40 would push over this turbo so maybe the only difference would be quicker spoolup on the hybrid? Not certain on that, but I dont think you'd be dissapointed with the hybrid.

I know I could handle some turbos :D . Last weekend on the dyno I seen 1600* and 35 or 36 lbs boost with the box on 5X5. Box on 1X5 I seen 1300* and 35 lbs boost.

I ran a series of EGT runs, long up hill, starting @ 5200' to 6k' or so. Sustained 30psi was 1200 degrees.

edit: i'll re-run that test when I get the 40 back from PDR ... it'll be Piersified.

Highest I have seen with just my box on kill, was 1450 for a few seconds going up from Deckers toward Buffalo Creek. It is a 7 mile long gently curving road, about 7% or 8% grade, starting at around 6500 feet to 8000 or so.

5000' here, severly overfueled. Even with my B-1-2 I don't have enough air for my M3's. It probably wouldn't be as bad if I had a regular Comp, but the Drag Comp just never lets up and the EGT's go through the roof. Last winter when Denis and I switched Comps, he was going through the roof and I was only seeing 1450*F, but that was at 4000'.

Am still seriously considering getting rid of this Drag Comp and going back to my standard version... just for EGT's sake. Yesterday, box on 3x3, 'bout 8% grade, 3/4 throttle, 1600*F and climbing as fast as I could get back out of it... had 46 psi boost at that point too.

Bombing at altitude is a science, and not many people have to deal with it... most are lucky and live at or near sea-level when running the sort of horsepower we're trying to up here.

It's a trade off! Only reason I would want to live at low elevation is for my truck. Other than that the mountains are the best!
