Hi guys:

My boss has a 1969 Mack Model R. The body is a little rough but the truck is all there. It ha a New Leader Lime Spreader on it, what is the spreader worth? The truck has a 237 engine in it, twin stick transmission, and tandem axles. I thought about buying it, doing a little work to it, selling the lime bed, installing a used dump bed. What is this truck worth? What do I have to do besides insure it and have a CDL to be able haul goods for others for $?

Thanks boys!

Don't quit your day job.

Old Mack

That is old! You may have lots of work to do to get the truck through inspection, especially if you think about crossing state lines! For your own use, to haul a load of gravel for your driveway, it might be OK, but you can hire a lot of hauling for what your insurance bill, and repair bill will be.

A friend had one of the early 237 "Maxidyne" engines - I got real sick of listening to that motor groan at 12-1400 rpm all day long. The cab was so small that you had to open the door to adjust the air ride seat, I bought a Peterbilt!

I think the cab is pretty good sized. Lnwing, I haven't bought the truck; so It is for sale. He's wanting $4000, the bed is a New Leader L something. The bed is in pretty good shape. He said he thought the bed was fairly new when he bought the truck 15 years ago:rolleyes: He has it advertiesed in the Heavy Equipment trader. You may be able to access it through traderonline.com and then see a picture of it.

I just thought of the idea, I thought it might give me some more work during my spare time to be able to make a little money on the side and have something to haul my pulling tractor on since i no longer have a Cummins. I'm sure the boss would let me borrow his 97 PowerChoke to haul the tractor though.

I just wanted some opinions, Thanks guys.

I hope I did not insult you John.

I was summing up the idea in simple terms that's all.

Your questions imply that your not that well versed on what you want to do. No big deal, that's why you ask right?

Okay, first off, DOT does not want to see no 69' Mack 237 holding up traffic. Well, maybe they would enjoy taking your money. See, a truck of that vintage in rough shape needs all kinds of upgrades/replacements, what have you. Many of these little items can cost you money and put the truck out of service on the spot.

Even in excellent condition, you need to be running full time to cover your costs and hopefully make a little profit. You have your plate, your insurance, probably your DOT #, etc. And even a 237 chews up a bit of fuel throughout the day.

You need to pick up work somehow. That usually means contract hauling for someone else. They won't want your old Mack representing them either.

The price sounds about right for the user who can use a truck like that on the farm. I would say the chassis alone is worth maybe $1,500 with out seeing it.

Hope I did not bust your bubble. The reality for many who get into something like this is a nightmare. I never had a rig but ran for other small and sometimes single rig owners years ago. What to find out what goes on out there on the road? Check out this link and read the forums.

By the way, after being out of it for 23 years, I am going to get my CDL and have back at it. In someone else's rig of course.
