Mag Hytec diff cover in 2011

I've read nothing but positive comments about the Mag Hytec line of products and want to install a rear diff cover on a 2011 - 3500 - SRW. I upsized my tires to Nitto Dura Grapplers size 285/70/17, including the spare. This takes up a bit more space under the box in the OEM spare carrier. I'm concerned that with the added capacity of the Mag Hytec cover that it sticks out further from the face of the diff housing, especially at the top near the spare tire. The Mag Hytec appears to have a 90 degree shoulder compared to the bowl shape of the stock cover but pictures are limited. Before I order the cover, can anyone comment on the clearance I'll have with this size of spare tire underneath? Thanks!

Maybe you can call Geno's and get an exact measurement on the cover, then measure your vehicle with the new tire size. The radius difference between the two tires is about 3/4".

Thanks Nick... I might have to do that before I order the cover and find it rubs the tire. With the added tire diameter and tread width, and the Mag cover sticking out further and at a higher point than the stock cover, it'll be close.

Thanks. I know it'll be close raising the tire past the diff which is fine, as long as the tire isn't touching the cover once it's up and in place. My tire is definitely not 3" higher than the cover now... almost even now which is why I wanted to know how far the cover sticks out. What size are your stock dually tires?

I have an 05', but I don't think the location of the axle/spare tire carrier has changed any.

When I had a 285 under the truck (and same with my 255/80's) I used a ratchet strap to pull the tire back about 1" from where it hung, and snugged it up. This provides adequate clearance. A bald 285 will clear pretty easily, but a new one will rub if it hangs in the normal spot.

I have a 2010 with 285/70/17 toyos and the mag hytech. I just pulled the tire snug up against the tow hitch then crank it down. It all clears fine even with the oversize spare (its a new toyo 285)

Here are a few picts of my truck. It is very tight even with the stock spare. I pulled the tire against the bumper after taking the pictures and gained a little. It doesn't hit but it is pretty close.

I'm still on the fence with this cover and should probably wait until I can hook up the fifth wheel and then see how much clearance I have with the truck squatted a bit. I like the cover but would rather have the spare tire under the box with no worries. Again, glad I asked!

The AFE cover might be an option. It holds 5 quarts v/s the Mag Hytec 8 quart. Stock is 4 quarts. I have no clue of the dimensions but it might be more shallow.

Don't forget that the axle not only moves vertically from varying weight and road conditions, it also rotates on its axis from spring windup when towing heavy loads.

Love the cover w the sight glass, but the sight glass nut has started to rust a bit. I was thinking it should be stainless but I guess not. If you live in the north w salt on roads in winter it will probably rust real bad.

Good to know... they do use salt here on the roads along with "sand" the size of M & M's! Not real good for windsheilds but a necessity at times. Last night we got about 8" of new snow in 6 hours!



Which Nitto's do you have on your truck? I put 285/70/17 Dura Grapplers on mine and so far so good but not many miles yet. I have the Terra Grapplers on my 1/2 ton and their good too.

Pulled the 5th wheel this weekend and glad I didn't purchase this cover, as it most definitely would have rubbed the oversize spare tire I have once the truck squatted with trailer weight. Just an "FYI" in case anyone is thinking of installing this cover in a similar situation.

I can run a 33" spare and fully squat without contact if I pull the spare to the rear, it's worth the extra 2 minutes mounting/dismounting the spare to have the added cooling and fluid.
