Mag-Hytec - GOOD SERVICE !

Last Friday night I attempted to change my transmission filter for the first time on my new DTT trans w/ a Mag-hytec Double Deep pan - just hit 9k miles and will be putting in synthetic.



Even though the instructions and the pan itself says; "30 INCH pounds - DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN" as luck would have it, I could not get the drain plug out. Even with a tightly fitting 3/16 allen head socket, I could not budge the plug. I finally ended up stripping the fitting. . Brute strength did not prevail.



I'll eventually get the plug out but that's not what I wanted to point out. I called Jerry at Mag-Hytec and told him my dilema. I'm sure he's seen this before and probably gets tired of people telling him that they followed the instructions carefully and did exactly as they were told to do. It's always someone else's fault - right... ? Well, regardless, Jerry volunteered to send me another plug at no charge. Had this been a 2nd or 3rd removall of the plug he may not have been as accommodating. In spite of their best efforts to make sure that nobody overtightened the plug (it's engraved right in the pan cover), it happened. It could have been the heat, could have been the transmission installer, etc, etc.



But Jerry and Mag-Hytec stood behind their product even though they didn't necessarily have to. After all, they weren't the one's who overtightened the plug.



My dingy, well worn, and well trained prospector's hat goes off the the folks at Mag-hytec for their GREAT customer service and friendly attitude.

I have had the same problem with mine. I did the install myself, and do all of my own service work. I used a torque wrench to reinstall the plug after the first drain. At the second drain the plug would not budge. I finally had to resort to using a small chisel and hammer on the edge of the plug to remove it. Now I have a nice little notch to use for future drains.

I have the chisel knotch thing down pat. My plug will not budge when the pan is hot. I should order a new plug for the just in case time.

Sounds like the chizel notch is the trick...

I was going to try and punch a torx bit into the hole and see if it had enough grab to do the trick - while at the same time using an impact wrench to "jar" it loose. After all it worked on my AFC break-off screw... . I'll leave the stripped hole alone and start with the chizel.



Thanks for mentioning to do it on a cold pan rather than a hot one. Mine was hot. I had just driven home and wanted to get the plug out while the oil was good and warm.



I'll wait till my new plug arrives and then do it in the morning (after sitting all night).

Gee I'm glad this came along. For a while I thought my transmission plug was the only one frozen. It was hot when I tried to remove it. Broke off a "brand new Craftman socket Next time it will be cool.

I haven't done it yet. I'm waiting for the new plug to arrive before I dive back into it.



Filter repalcements on these units are straight forward. Remove either 2 or 3 small flathead screws that hold the filter in place and reinstall the pan with a new gasket.



The only thing different about our setup (that I haven't encountered before) is the additional spacer that estends the filter below the valve body instead of directly on it. It's there to lower the filter to within 1/2 inch of the bottom of the Double Deep pan. Without a spacer, the filter would sit too high and not suck the oil from the bottom of the pan.



Going from memory... . the filter screws get a snug torque, the pan bolts get 12-18 Foot pounds, and the drain plug gets 30 Inch pounds.



If you haven't done so, you should adjust your front and rear Bands while you have the pan off. This should be done every once in awhile to prevent internal wear. All you need is a torque wrench that will do inch pounds and the specs from the shop manual.



I have a Haynes Manual with the proper adjustments for the Bands. Private Message me before you change your filter and I'll forward you the steps and specs for adjusting them. Straight forward, not very technical.

Trany Band Ajdustment Instructions on 94,95,96.

I recently typed up some Band Adjustment instructions - including torque settings and band adjustment screw settings - for another member.



I included the settings for the automatics in 1994 - 1996 trucks.

If you're thinking about changing the transmission filter, adjust your front and rear bands while your in there. "Yes" even you can do it. This is a good, non-technical Shade Tree maintenance item that most of us should have no problem doing.

I'd appreciate it if one of you transmission experts would proof read my instructions to help make sure I'm not missing anything. I think I've got it, but I'd feel better knowing someone else has looked them over.

What we use where I work to put steel or stanless steel togher with aluminum is "LP seal" it is use mostly for LP gas, works great and you can take the parts apart over and over.
