I recently installed a mag-hytec dana 80 cover on my 99' 3500 that I tow heavy with. No problems with the installation, great fit etc, etc. AFTER the install I decided to fill it with GL-5 as I thought was correct. I wanted a little more viscosity so I "blended" 80W-90 and 85W-140 of the same brand 50% each. (next time 75W-140 synthetic only!!) I then made a 1000 mile trip and towed heavy about 500 miles of it. Within a couple of days after returning and after the truck had sat awhile I pulled the hy-tec dipstick. HOLY S. . T!! It had a glob of "fuzzy"shavings on the stick, so then I decide to drain everything and refill. HOLY S. . T AGAIN!!! The drain plug has ANOTHER glob of "fuzzy" shavings on it as well. It's draining out now as I am writing this thread. I remember looking at the stock cover's magnet and it had a little fuzzy stuff on it, but it had almost 30,000 miles on it. I don't remember hearing any whining or roaring coming in on my most recent trip. Does anyone think I have done severe damage to the Ring & Pinion? I was going to pull the cover if necessary and look, however, if it is damaged some but not roaring yet, what good will it do to look? Do you think I might as well go ahead and order a complete "master "kit ring & pinion set from Randy's and have it on standby for what is coming soon? What are your opinions?

put in a synthetic and run it ... watch it close and make a decision after some miles..... if it continues pull cover and look at gear teeth and bearings for wear scuff on bearing faces...

you signature is missing... . how many miles ??? if new ... normal to have some break'in dust..... if older ... ya got an issue with dust/shavings. .

on edit... if ya do change it and your 3. 54 now think about 3. 73's... great geer ratio

It's normal...

Don't worry, it's normal. The magnet is catching the metal that did not drain out with the lube change. Keep cleaning it once a month and eventually it will show less metal. It's one of the benefits of a Mag-Hytec ;)

Having metal shavings floating around in my diff is why I changed the fluid at 5K miles when the truck was new and every 30K miles thereafter. If I was towing I would change the fluid every 15K miles.

I would almost have agree with Dane here. Unless it is a large and substantial amount, I wouldn't worry. Most likely it has always been in there and couldn't find a way out. The magnet is actually drawing the particles out and keeping them from being recirculated. It is better to be on the magnet than in the gears. That is like the magnetic drain plug in oil pans. Most people get upset to see metal on them, but they are doing there job. Unless it is substanial amounts, I wouldn't worry. Just keep changing the fluids and keep a watchful eye on it.

My rear Mag-Hytek does the same thing. I only have 30k miles and I'm running Royal Purple Synthetic oil. I think it's normal wear from the Limited Slip Differential.

Like the others, I suspect that the metal is normal, BUT I would not recommend brewing your own lube by mixing. Even with the same manfacturer, the additive packages could be different.

I use 90 in front and 140 in the rear and don't have any problems (even when I lived in Colorado).

Same here... Mag-Hytec, Royal purple, 3600 heavy miles with 17 GCW=fuzz on the magnet. It is a little un-nerving. . But I would rather have it there than swimming around in the oil... Oh ya... don't custom blend... once upon a time (in the 50's) you might have got away with it... but now...

PS... Saw a 20° drop in differential temp going to Mag and RP doing a comparison... .
