I am looking to buy covers for both trucks the 92 has a 70 and the 96 has an 80. Which is the better cover? I like on a dirt road that gets nasty when it rains and we have 2 miles of mud and 15 miles to the nearest car wash so they will get dirty, Which will work best for me the powdercoated magview or the finned Mag-Hytec, does it clean OK or do the fins stain. I like the idea of the lexan on the 92 because my dad drives it and it would be easier for him to check without crawling under. I would also consider some used covers if anybody has one, Thanks Trey

the mag hytec is a very clean unit. I have not had any problems with it. the paint is even cleanable like in a carwash and the dipstick is not hard to check. just an allen wrench to take the tightness off the seal (not much) and check the level, plus, the dipstick is magnetized so you actualy pull out the metal with every check. . O-ring seal can hold 140 psi of preasure so no leaks there. My opinion is for the mag hytec for both trucks you have. The 80 makes the capacity to 8 quarts total. not sure on the 70.....

Hope this helps,

Eric

I installed the Magview covers on both front and rear differentials. I went with the Magview for the following reasons:

* The lexan window

* They make covers for both differentials (I had been told Mag-Hytec did not make a cover for the Dana 70/60 front differential).

* Chris Sutton has them on both of his differentials, and I really loved how they look.

Now, the front diff cover has a serious issue. Part of the track bar (or maybe it's actually the pitman arm??) is too close and actually hits the Magview cover when you go over big enough bumps, and will dig gouges out of the Magview. I replaced the front Magview with the OEM cover for now. See this thread I posted earlier about this.

I will soon be installing a 3" front end leveling kit to solve that problem, and will then re-install the Magview front cover.

Supergas,

Most of the TDR posts have traditionally favored the Mag-Hytec. Looking at the photos I too thought it the best, but when I compared it side by side the MagView got my money. Within the MagView window are two large magnets that "filter" the lubricant as compared to the 'hytecs small dipstick magnet. I prefer the fill port and temp sensor port on the 'view. The Magview is very heavy and uses "fins" for reenforcement around the mounting hole area. Both are nice covers, the Mag-Hytec uses a o-ring for sealing but be aware that the axle housing is not machined to seal by o-ring. Many will seal but if I install the 'hytec I still use gray silicone for insurance. Lastly, I heard a rumor that MagView has financial difficulties and only previously built covers will be available... ... I intend to pick up a couple for future bomb's:)
