My turn for a stupid question...

I will be installing a Mag Hytec rear diff cover on my truck which has the 11. 5 axle and would like to ask other Mag Hytec users a couple of questions.

1. Did you use the dipstick to judge how high to fill the axle or some other method? Also, about how much fluid will it take?

2. I read somewhere that a dimple or hole on the gasket mating surface needs to be siliconed to prevent leaks, is this true?

3. Did you use a torque wrench on the cover or the "by hand" method? I read another post where a fellow used a torque wrench and ended up snapping a bolt off in the diff.

I am gonna get me one of those Mag Hytec later too. I have used a torque wrench on the ones in the past when I have changed the oil and no problems. Maybe is torque wrench is out of spec. I would imagine you use the dipstick to judge the level-thats what its there far. I don't know how much it increases the capacity maybe a couple quarts. I am sure we will hear from those that have them.

Torque wrench

I think the instructions called for inch pounds not foot pounds. Maybe someone used the wrong wrench. I believe I used the dipstick to measure fluid. My truck is the 10. 5 rear so I don't know of the dimple you mentioned but mine sealed nice with no leaks. I think the product is great and hoping for a front one soon. :D

I have installed 2 and the first one had a leak. It was near the bottom where a bolt hole was eliminated I think. We pulled that one off and applied a small amout of silicone and the leak was stopped. The 2nd one I just put a light film of silicone all the way around, no problems.

As for the torque wrench, I've used one everytime. Although you could probably get by without if you were reasonably consistent with your torque and didn't gorilla torque it. Hence the whole reason for a torque wrench.

It seems like I used 8qts on mine and filled to the dipstick range.

Hope this helps,

Darren

Thank's for the reply's. I should have the cover at my doorstep either today or tomorrow and it will be installed ASAP.

I installed the 11. 5 this weekend the total capacity is 8qts. The top and bottom bolt holes are eliminated and need to be filled with RTV silicone. It looks sweet installed, I have received at least 5 comments on it and it has only been on for 48 hours. Good luck! Bryan

Thank's GSkipper,

8 quarts of fluid  , thats more oil than my wifes Tahoe has in the crankcase :D .

I wonder why Mag Hytec does not use the top and bottom bolt.

Rosco

They don't use the top or bottom because the top is used for the dipstick/fill hole and the bottom is the drain plug. Hope that helps. Bryan

Gskipper -

What do you mean the top and bottom holes are for the dipstick and drain plug? Are you saying you sealed up the drain plug and dipstick on your Mag-Hytec? I think I'm confused again!

Sorry for the confusion. The top and bottom bolt holes in the dif itself will be sealed up. The Mag-Hytec cover does not have them because of the drain plug at bottom and dipstick at top of the new cover. I hope that makes it more clear. Bryan

I nstalled the 11. 5 Mag Hy-Tec cover on my '03 Ram and also had a small leak at the bottom of the cover. After removing it, I found that the "o" ring that seals the cover actually protrudes into the diff cavity thus allowing the lubricant to leak out. I haven't written Mag Hy-Tec yet about this design flaw, but I would recommend that everyone use silicone sealer in lieu or in addition to the supplied "o" ring. Otherwise, I am very happy with the appearance of the cover and yes it took 8 qts of fluid to reach the mid-point on the dipstick.

I had the same problem with my 11. 5, the o-ring at bottom corner was not in the right location. Also further up on the axle seating surface there was a dent and the o-ring went over it. So I had two small leaks. Took the cover off, cleaned it good and applied a thin layer of Mopar black silicone to the cover, that fixed it.

I love that cover.

I stuck mine on the second time with RTV the first time I just filled the hole.

Takes 8 quarts used royal purple.

IMO The gasket on the Mag Hy-Tec looks under engineered when compared to factory gasket.

The factory specs 30 foot pounds for the bolt torquing the soft Stainless Allen bolts can't take that much be careful while tightening them.

I hope I never have to take that cover off I am really looking forward to that drain plug and I really like the magnetic dipstick that way cool.

Turbo Bob and ttreibel,

If it's not too much trouble, would you guy's check and see if you've ever had any contact between your cover and the spare tire.

Rosco

Mine seemed pretty close so I pulled it back a couple of inches with a light duty ratchet strap.

Darren

My spare tire was VERY close too when I originally installed the diff cover (~1/4"). I lowered the tire slightly with the winch and held it back toward the bumper while an assistant cranked the tire back up. That gave me about an inch of clearance.

Mike

I was able to get more than an inch of clearance also with the help of an assistant but I checked today while I had a ton of wood pellets in the bed and I am probably rubbing when I go over the bumps.

I like the cover but I feel that it is still a work in progress and the guys at Mag Hytec really need to make this cover for the Dodge and not just the AA 11. 5 axle.

That stinks. I dont want to have to move , relocate, make a bracket, or do anything to have to install this thing. I'm definitely not buying one until they redesign the covers. .
