Thinking about getting a Mag Hytec trans pan. Should I go with the standard or the deep pan for more fluid? Also does the pan have an o-ring like the differential covers or does it use a gasket and RTV like the stock? If it has an o-ring, can it be reused after filter changes or do u have to use a new one?

Any tips on installation, problems, likes/dislikes of these pans? Any competitors out there ( read cheaper but same or better quality and design)?

Thanks in advance for info.

I personally opted for the standard pan. Did not feel 4 quarts extra was necessary, didn't want the big bulging pan and that an extra 2 quarts thrown out every oil change. . DC has a nice dual o-ring gasket, you probably could reuse it but at about $7 each, I change them.

Mag HyTec

We are using a double deep Mag HyTec pan on our school project Dodge Ram and we love it! The extra trans fluid is the only way to go to help your trans live. Trans fluid is cheap insurance. Mag HyTec is the very best bar none! Solid well built equipment that will last forever. Yes, Jerry sells replacement O rings. His quality is top notch!!

The trans pan does not have an o ring,it just uses a gasket. I would opt for the double deep. An extra 4 quarts makes a differance and with a 4x4 you have lots of clearance. The double deep does not extend below the crossmember.

I originally purchased the Mag-Hytec Deep trans. pan (Summer 1998).

As soon as the "new" (then) Double Deep version was released for sale I was "on it. " ( :D )

After having both in use for quite a few miles, I personally prefer the Double Deep version. However, if you use your 4x heavily off-road in the nastiest of situations, I would go with the Deep version.

Having had my sender on my 96 in the cooler line, I saw about a 15 to 20* drop having the DD pan.

Although I don't remember the numbers...

I do know that John Holmes (TDR staff writer) experimented with the two different pans on his own Rams and found the Deep pan to have something like a 20 deg. F. reduction over the OE steel pan... and another 15-20 deg. cooler temps. with the Double Deep pan. I believe these numbers were while under tow in extreme Nevada heat. Some of the temp. reduction was due to an increase in capacity however, I would suspect that the largest portion of the gain would be attributed to the finned aluminum construction of the Mag-Hytec pans... and the fact that they hang down lower than stock thereby seeing increased air flow.

JCyrbok-THe standard Mag pan will not give you any more capacity than the stock pan. The double deep pan will only give you another 2 qts. For the 24 valve autos the trans pan on the trans is deeper than 12 valvers. The double deep pan is nice and strong and came with (Geno's) filter, lowering block for filter and a new gasket. I did not notice any change in temp but I was having trans slipping on hard corners as I was running out of fluid for the pump. :D
