Well I finally did it. Replaced the factory transmission pan with a Mag Hytec 68rfe-a. It was a lot of fun, kinda, but not really. The first encounter was getting the old pan off.
I went to Tractor supply and bought a giant 6 gallon rubber pan to catch the fluid so I would not spill it on the carport driveway. Well when I got all the bolts of except a couple,
the rtv sealer just would not let go. My son was helping me by way of google and I followed one of the suggestions of using a razor blade to slice between the pan and rtv.
Dang sure was right, cause the pan dropped before I could catch it and I was wearing a good quart on my arm and a little on my face:). Next was getting the new pan on, not too bad. got it torqued down to specs and now up to the dipstick filler hole. Why, I asked myself, did they put the dipstick filler hole to where you need a certain type of funnel
with a flexible bend in the tube, which I did not have. So, My son and I put a small funnel and a larger funnel together to make a make shift gizmo. It worked fine, til it got bumped and came apart. I ended up going to Home Depot to buy a proper flex funnel, but all they had was a small transfer fluid hand pump. It worked out the best, without spilling a drop. At least I have the pan installed and a drain plug now, not to mention more fluid capacity.

If the job had been easier the father and son bonding may not have taken place. Now you have some stories to laugh about in a couple of years.

Indeed, He did get under the truck and help me put the new pan on. There is nothing like a little father and son laugh time

I agree. My daughter has worked on all my trucks since she was eight. She is seventeen now and can change the oil and fuel filters. Install lift kits and clutches. Fuel pumps and a huge list of every day stuff. She was with a group of girls doing a vehicle maintenance class. When the instructor ,who is a mechanic, got to changing a tire and completed he asked for questions. She asked why he did not use a torque wrench to set the lug nuts. I got a laugh out of that.

So what I want to know.... if you can see a noticeable change in fluid temperature once you've installed this pan.. especially when towing... I'm almost tempted in buying this pan after changing my fluid and getting a bath.... if I'd had time I would have tig welded a plug into the bottom of the existing pan... but my real concern is transmission temperature when towing...

Well I have not towed with it yet, but when I test drove after the change out, it did not get up to normal operating temp of 167deg where it used to in my drive. It topped out at 152 and was up and down hill in the country. I think it is worth it just to have the extra fluid and drain plug. I put one on my 2005 Ram a few years ago, of course I did take the fluid bath taking the oem pan off, just not as bad.

I can tell you my towing temps were lower than most with the MagHytec pan and AMZ/OIL Universal ATF. Pulling long 6% grade coming into Pahrump temp was 172 with outside temp in the low 90's.

That's a good grade to test your tow vehicle, especially in the summer. I remember that grade. We stayed at Lakeside RV Resort. We needed a break, and that was a really nice place to relax. Lots of Goose poop around the edge of the lake. Other than that I give it a thumbs up. Its a drive to Vegas though.
