Is an extra deep pan really needed? I'm thinking of purchasing one since I am due for transmission service.

Will having the Double Deep pan compromise any off-road clearance?

Any guidance from someone who has already purchased would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

well I would be shocked if you were able to hit the pan unless you are doing some crazy offroading. I don't think the DD pan goes below the frame. it does do a good job keeping the fluid cooler.

I am running the double deep and it is still above the frame crossmember where it is protected. I tend tu use all my ground clearance and have not touched it yet

I would suggest the DD pan it really makes a big difference in trans temp. Since instalation I rarely go above 110 degees, usually 40-50 degrees above ambient temp. As Bob said it does not go below the cross member plus it is a serious upgrade in strength from the OEM pan.

Bob 4X4, do you find that you run hotter with the two Hella lights where you have them? I have been looking at getting a set up like that but I dont want to compromise air flow. Also, how much higher (above normal high beams) do those lights illuminate in that position?

I haven't seen any increase in temps from the lights. I ahve also changed the front end since that pic. I now have a pre runner style bumper for the increased protection and better approach angle.

This is the type of stuff I take my Cummins through:

Between and above the frame rails doesn't really protect it. Cast pans crack and leak all the fluid, steel pans dent - obviously neither is good. I have a full cage underneath. But a cage wont always protect the full weight of the truck on a boulder.

In my daily driver Ram, a cast pan is fine and perhaps preferred, but in a real offroad enviroment where you may kick up a rock between the rails, a cast pan is a definite no go. I still have a full cage over the pans and tcase and they still get impacted.

I actually spent time and $$ to replace a cast pan.

Just my . 02

I travel all over and as of yet have not touched my pan. 40 years of off roading and have not crushed (or broken) a pan. Rubicon. Dussey. Calico etc. all over Baja, nevada oregon and Arizona

I have the deep ATS pan and I also built a homemade oil cooler and after towing on interstate with 47re automatic 36 ft trailer 12,000 lbs when pull off to get fuel you could grab the oil cooler with bare hands as it was so cool. A+++ in my mind EXCEPT... . whoever at ATS drilled and tapped the back of the pan for the temp guage ran the tap in WAY too deep and it was a winch to get it to stop leaking. Plusses are though it does not extend beyond the frame - very strong - and looks cool too. My automatic now holds over 7 gallons!! of transmission fluid and still looks brand new after 5,000 miles so far.
