I'm gonna be installing a Mag Hytech rear differential cover here shortly. I have the cover just waiting on the oil from Amsoil to arrive (prob doing it next weekend).

I just wanted to see if there was anything in the instructions that are not covered once I start the install. I thought that I had read in a previous post (cant find it now) that there are some numbers that are casted into the mateing surface of the Diff that need to be taken care of for the O-ring to seal corrcectly, but the instructions dont say anything about it. ANy idea's. If so, what should I use to fill them in?

ALso what will the new capacity be. I think I have read that it goes up to 6quarts? How much LSD additive should I put in? I know with the Amsoil many people do not add it without a prob, but mine over the past two years with Amsoil 75-140 has started to chatter a bit, especially when cold on a rear tight turn (like in a fastfood drive thru)

Also anything else I should look out for with the Diff open? ANything need to be re-torqued, etc?

Thanks for any info/advice you guys can provide. See sig for truck info. Truck has 57K total and about 25k since last diff oil change.

I used the copper RTV to fill in the castings. I also ran a thin bead of the RTV all the way around the cover. Can't remember the exact capacity, I think around 2 extra quarts. I use a single(7oz) bottle of Ford additive in mine. I also run Amsoil. 40K on rear end running this way with zero problems.

You will have to fill the casting Numbers with either RTV or like I did, used JB Weld. All you need to do on the O-ring is run a little oil on it andslap it on. Mine has not even had any moisture in 5 years.

If you have the Dana 80 Cover you will have almost 8 quarts to put in total... the opening at the top is big enough that you can pour the quart right in with no problem

When you tighten the fill plug, go to finger tight then just a slight tug with the allen. NO MORE THAN THAT!! just snug with the wrench and thats it. .

Other than that, no problems on installing... .

thanks guys thats the info I was looking for.

I have a Dana 70 as I have a 2500 with an auto any idea on the capicity with that?

According to Genos garage catalog the Dana 70 oem is 7. 0 to 7. 8 pints

with the Mag tech it goes to 12 pints. That's 6 Quarts alright.

Also have a medium flat file handy.

The stamped numbers in the housing can be raised.

So with the flat file, flat on that mating surface you want to make sure all the ridges from the stampings are gone. Go easy and don't dig the edge of the file into the mating surface on the axle.

I used "Right Stuff"

Right Stuff from Permatex

to fill in the voids on the axle's mating surface.

This stuff is like a wonder sealer. . it's amazing. Got me 400 miles on a cracked transmission line with no leaks, while towing through NH. Used Right Stuff and a split rubber hose and two clamps to make a bandaid. Amazing how it sealed. When I replaced the transmission line, the hose bandaid was glued on real well. Not drop of transmission fluid in the joint.

Thanks for the info guys. I will look into the Right Stuff from permatex. I have had nothing but great experiences with their other products. Thanks for the heads up on the possible need for a file too. I hate getting into something and not having everything handy.

Thanks

Cover is on and new gear oil in with out a hitch. I think that I lucked out and the stamped numbers/letter all fell to the inside of the o-ring, but I smoothed them and filled them just to be sure.

I got a total of about 5qts in mine which brought it to just below the high level line on the dipstick. This was after abot 35miles and doing figure 8's. I did not do the jack up each side of the truck trick though to get all of the old lube out of the axle tubes.

Thanks for the help/info guys, the cover looks great and no more chatter either, even with out the LSD additive.

Thanks
