i just bought a mag-hytek double deep transmission pan and was wondering if i can use an OEM rubber coated steel gasket instead of the paper one that came with it ?

thanks heyboss.

man, this pan is HUGE. almost need a transmission jack to hold it in place while bolting it up. hope the pan and the amsoil i'll be putting in it will cool my transmission temps down a little.

be careful when it comes to the mag hytec bolts.

The bolts have a tendancy to come loose and fall out. It may be worse with the thicker gasket.

The black gasket works great :)

Just a heads up on the bolts

Bob, do you remember the torque specs on the bolts? I might need to climb under there and recheck mine. A transmission shop installed my DD pan a month or two ago. Bill

Mag-Hytec says 14-16 FOOT POUNDS. I did mine at 15. I changed mine on Monday and I STILL have to add fluid every day now (6 times). It is a major pain, i wish the stupid thing would hurry up and "Burp" itself. Today seems like it actually was still on the dipstick.

Seems like every 30 miles or so it drops below the dipstick so everywhere i go i have a jug of ATF and a funnel. All the chevy owners must thing my DC is a POS since i always pop the hood and have to add fluid.

bob, thanks for the heads up on the bolts.

with a total fluid drain and installation of the double deep pan will 20 qts. of amsoil be enough?

FYI,this is for my DTT equiped '01

The black gasket that comes with the pan is very high quality. It is made to be reused again and again, just put a light coat of transmission fluid on the transmission side of the pan gasket this keeps the gasket from sticking on that side. This will allow the gasket to be easily removed when changing transmission fluid. Also try lock tight on the threads(not permanent type), this will help the bolts from backing out. I hope this helped you.

The way azgearpro describs it is the same way Bill K. does it (except for the locktite) I used my gasket on my old truck 10 + times this way w/ no leaks. I made sure I tightened it down in several stages in a cross pattern.

My Mag-Hytec transmission pan kept dropping bolts on long trips towing a fifth wheel. They were all getting loose and some fell right out. I bought a whole new set of stainless allen screws at the hardware store and used a stainless lockwasher under each bolt. That was 2 years ago and they haven't come loose since.

Yeah, I had a couple bolts go AWOL on the freeway. Re-torqued 'em back down to 16 (they were all kind of loose), Checked 'em a couple times after that and they are all fine! My temps while towing the 5ver don't even hit 150 in the pan! Love it!

i'm guessing the loosening of the bolts with an aluminum pan is kinda like with a aluminum wheel. they need re-torqued after about a 100 miles or so of rotating them due to the expansion and contraction from the heat and then they are fine.

I am getting ready to install my Mag-Hhtec pan this weekend. I am a little concerned with the bolts comming loose. What do you guys think of the non perm loc tite idea? Any chance it can contaminate the transmission. Also I had trouble finding a torque wrench that would read in the 14-16 ft pound range. My Craftsman is 25-250. If found an inexpensive one at harbor freight 0-80 ft pounds. Do you all think this would be accurate enough for these bolts or should I continue to look?

Thanks for all your expertise.

Frank

Thats a good idea. Do I need to use the loc tite on them or just torque them and recheck them? I just dont want them to come loose.

Thanks

Frank

I don't even use a torque wrench, just go by feel but I've been turning wrenches for over 20 yrs.

Torque'm as mentioned above and you'll be fine, no need for loc tite and if you ever need to take down some time they'll come off easy. Just keep an eye on it for a couple days if you want to be comfortable and like any thing else check for leaks not only trans. but everything else when you do your routine oil changes.

I personally would use stainless bolts (softer) with star washers (lots of little "bites" ) . Stainless is softer than most any other bolt you can find which is OK here because of the low torque and the star washers have more contact points and evenly distrubute the stress unlike a split lock which would try to pry the head off the bolt.

Guys, Thanks for all the good information. I plan to install the pan this weekend provied all the Calif wild fires have eased. We are in San Diego and everything is covered with a thick layer of ash. I do not want to take the truck apart for fear of contamination. I will let you guys know how it goes!

I believe if the black paper/neoprene gasket is utilized AND the bolts supplied by Mag-Hytec are accurately torqued in a systematic pattern, AND all bolts are subsequently rechecked for torque a week or so later (i. e. , one time), the bolts will retain their tightness.

Guys, Thanks for all the help and ideas. The pan is finally in! I really didn't have any real problems. Draining the original pan without a plug was fun. The mag pan went in very easy. A couple of observations: The supplied gasket appeared to be a cork material and the stock gasket appeared to be neoprene with metal inserts. I went ahead and used the cork one supplied. I hope this is Oak. It took 7 quarts of trans fluid to refill the transmission. How many did you guys use? It was hard to tell when it was full as one side of the dip stick would look full and the other side would appear as 1/2 filled. What I did was take the old trans fluid from my drain pan and fill the empty ATF bottles and tried to measure how much I removed. It looked fairly close to what I put in. I could only find the ATF+4 at the dealer approx $7. 50 per quart. WOW! Thanks again for all the tips. It really helped with the install.
