With the extra quarts a Mag Hytech trans pan on my 1st Gen auto trans, is it possible to have longer intervals of ATF+4? I drained with 37,300, the fluid flowing looked like new oil. Any substantial proof from TDR Wizards? Daily driver 24-miles round trip + 100 miles here and there monthly. Blessings to all, Patrick

In my humble opinion NO. Why risk a failed trans just to save a couple of bucks on transmission oil.

I have a third gen truck with the 68RFE auto that has 145K on the OD. I put the Mag-Hytech pan on the truck around 15K, I have changed both filters and oil on the factory schedule mileage interval for the Trans. I have never had an issue yet with my trans and I intend to keep to the factory schedule.

Do you know factory schedule for 1st Gen truck? I could not find it in my Chrysler/Dodge factory repair manual, thank you for quick reply, and shared experience. Patrick

Normal Service: Check every 12K, Change every 24K
Severe Service: Check every 3K, Replace every 6K (also calls for a Band replacement with the fluid)

Severe Service Definition: The term "Severe Service" is defined as operating the vehicle under any of the following conditions:

^ Frequent short trips driving less than 5 miles (8 km)
^ Frequent driving in dusty conditions
^ Extensive idling
^ Trailer towing
^ Sustained high speed operation
^ Off road driving
^ Desert operation
^ Frequent starting and stopping
^ Cold climate operation
^ Short trip operation at freezing temperatures (engine not thoroughly warmed up)
^ Commercial service
^ Stop and go driving

yeah no worrries... I just laughed outload when I read the list.. some I understand but some are simply absurd.

We have to remember how "new" the Cummins-in-a-pickup idea was then. IIRC the manual also has a section on increasing tire pressures for "high speeds"...like 65 mph.:D
Mine's a stick but I think Bluebird would be fine at the 24K changes.

A 93 would be specced for the older fluid and a non-lockup TC, less fluid life and much more heat generated in the fluid. With ATF+4 the formulation is better as Tier 3 synthetic but the aromatics that make it better evaporate with use and constant heat cycles. The other thing to consider is the tendency to collect moisture with the heat and cool cycles. As a general rule 30-40k or once per year under normal driving with a lockup TC, 20-30 or once per year with mom-lockup TC is not out of line. Parts are hard to get, trans fluid is relatively cheap and easy to get.
