maghytec published a whole series of instructions that had torque values of 12-17 foot pounds.

They have since issued refined instructions of 5-7 foot pounds.

So guess what!

I have successfully stripped most of the pan bolt!

It took me most of the day just to do one hole!

So I need to hire this job out.

I live in Oklahoma City, and need to find a reputable shop to do the rest.

Any thoughts???

A transmission shop, a mechanics shop?

This seriously sucks!

All I did was follow the instructions and now have a disaster on my hands!

Thanks

How many did you strip out before you quit?

What has been your course of repair?

If tapping to the same hole size is out of the question I'd look at going one step up. Sometimes that means going from metric to standard, or vice versa.
Preferably fine thread.

Actually the stock torque spec is 85-125 inch pounds (so roughly 7-10 ft-lbs).
Does MagHytek include new fasteners with their pan? If the MagHytek pan is thicker than the stock steel pan (which I would presume is the case), you may need longer screws to ensure adequate thread engagement.

well....I have their service bulletin in my hands...#68RFE

Correct torque is 105 Inch pounds or 7-9 Foot Pounds.

It states that the original published value is 12-16 Foot Pounds.

I need to have most helicoiled, but there are 4 that will require the cross member to be removed, and I don't have the ability to do that.

I Helicoiled one and it took orever to do it carefully.

I thought only one was stripped, but on re-assembly, I realized most of the bolts wouldn't make it to 7 foot pounds, so I sopped.

Need to take it to a good transmission shop, and I think I found one.

Not a national chain, but a shop that has a really good reputation for good work.

Pan is leaking, but it is drivable.

this really sucks because I have been out of work for a year!

Really high unemployment Her is OKC, and My field is saturated with candidates.

Living solely on my wife's income now.

Luckily she has a good job that pays well.

Im Sorry to hear of your situation.

If I were you, and had more time than money, (a situation I can relate to) I'd try a retap before sending it off. Expereminting with one hole can't hurt at this point. I don't know off hand what size pan bolts are in the 68 but I would look at tapping up to the next size over a helicoil. Aluminum is soft and can somewhat easily be manipulated to a different size. Ive done this on the back of aluminum engines on a 4" and 6" trash pump with positive long term results. As I said above don't discount switching from metric to standard or vice versa, whichever is closer to the original size. Fine thread requires a different tap size than course so there are multiple options here. If you know the OEM thread size I could possibly help here. It is tricky in a blind hole but can be done with patience. Pre measuring the hole and marking it off on the drill bit and tap with electrical tape keeps you from going too deep for example.
Lots of ways to skin a cat here .

I completely understand,
But when you are flat on your back, on a dirty garage floor, with transmission fluid in your hair and dripping everywhere, and you are performing what I call an Apollo 13 project, where one mistake, a miss drilled hole, a broken tap, anything, and the transmission body is scrap, and a new transmission is needed, I am then in big trouble.

I know when I have a project over my head, and am not too proud to admit it.

Transmission is all helicoiled.

Cost me 475.00!!!!

I want to let everyone know about this in the hopes that I can prevent this from happening to them!!!

And if anyone needs a great transmission shop in Oklahoma City / Bethany, you can’t go wrong with Roy’s transmission, on Route 66 (39th exspressway)

Did right by me, and has a great reputation!!!

heli coils are easy and fast to do.

Yes they are, although a blind hole makes it a little trickier (just need a blind tap). I've probably done a thousand of them, screwed up some along the way but once you get the hang of it they are easy.

Glad the OP was able to get it fixed, expensive lesson for sure but if you had to do 15 of them plus dropping the pan, replacing fluid etc, the price seems pretty reasonable. I wouldn't do it for less if I owned a shop.

What really steams me is the fact at 60,000 I drained and dropped the pan, replaced the filters, then went online for the pan torque values!

I did what it said and managed to screw op the transmission body!
At first I thought it was my torque wrench, so I threw it away.
It could never hit the published torque values, and following the instructions I messed up things bad.

Then maghytec releases a service bulletin AFTER the damage was done.

Now I’m not a litigious person, but I am thinking of filing a small claims suit to cover the damages!
