Hi guys.

After being totally disapointed with the straightpipe I installed on my truck, I think I found the sound I was looking for. I quickly ordered up a Magnaflow muff p/n 12772 and put on. Much Better. :) No more crappy ricer sound. Its a little on the quiet side but thats o. k. by me. Its got a nice deep tone now without drone. All It needs now is little more fuel. ;)

I was talking about these with Rip and he was saying that in a couple years the magnaflows would be noticeably louder due to some of the packing deteriorating and the rest sooting up. His summation was good muffler, comparatively expensive, poor longevity. Getting my new exhaust installed on the 23rd. Mine will be resonator and muffler. I like quiet though so I may have him pull the resonater and drop in another muffler dependiing on how things sound after the muffler/resonator install. Im going to use the spl meter I got for my home theater to take some objective measurments before and after. If anyones interested I'll post numbers.

Defiantly would be interested in sound numbers. . I like the sound of my 2000 around town with the 4" but the drone gets old FAST on long trips. . Can't wait to sell and save to order my 04

Ben, I had to use an adapter from 3 1/2 id to 4 in i. d. adapter and a short (aprox 8 in. ) piece of 4 in. pipe to make the muffler fit. But this was after I had installed the straightpipe first. I also cut off the 3 1/2 in. portion of the tailpipe to make the muffler fit without an adapter on the rear of the muffler. Then I fabbed up some hangers out of 1/4 in. steel rod , welded them to the muff and hooked them in the factory rubber isolators. As for those worried about extreme noise while towing, this muffler will fit the bill nicely on extended trips. :)

Mark,

What size pipe are you using on those sytems. Didn't really stick out on your site, I did see one spot that said 4" tail pipe, the stock pipe is 4". Do you have a 5" system.

Thanks for all the info, it is helpful. Exhaust is one of those areas where bigger is not always better that is for sure, run into that with many a gas motor before. Didn't know if the same scavaging effects applied to a diesel or not. I am still up in the air as what I am going to do for sure. I know I will be going to the Edge Comp box or some thing similar, which are all rated in the 140 Hp area by the sounds of it, so I am hoping to get 400 hp to the rear tire. That and a better air box and exhaust to go with it.

We have found an easy and inexpensive way to improve the exhaust and make it 4" most of the way with a 4" straight through muffler. This is done by simply replacing the second intermiate pipe and muffler.

To make this exhaust change the first intermiate pipe is rolled 180 degrees so the bend is up and the second intermiate pipe is replaced with a Ford FDIP98-1 which goes from 3. 5" to 4". The bend of the new pipe is also turned up, this gets the inlet elevation of the muffler to the same elevation as the stock tail pipe so a straight through muffler can be used. Next the stock tail pipe will need to be cut to remove the 3. 5" portion from the stock muffler outlet. Now the stock tail pipe will fit the straight through muffler outlet.

The the sketch in my post on this thread.
