I thought I was getting the Magnaflow put on while I was out of town but it turns out they did not do it. Now the guy is talking about maybe Banks... from the Muffler back since the rest is already 4". New muffler and 5" back... any thoughts from experience?

Thanks-

Dave

I've had my Banks exhaust for about two or three weeks, maybe 750 miles.

Immediately I noticed a *great* exhaust note. There is no drone at 2000 to 2400 rpm, which I have heard is a problem with some other exhausts. The tip looks pretty good, and it doesn't seem to make my fender black with soot (another complaint I have heard). I was hoping to hear more of the turbo chirp in the exhaust note, but it must be a Ford thing. All you hear is BWAAAAAAAAAAA!

The only thing I do not like is coming from under the hood. I have the turbo-back system, which eliminates the elbow coming off the turbo. I now hear a wheeze when the turbo gets to full boost. I guess it's the sound the turbo makes when the wastegate is dumping. Does not sound cool, but you can't hear it outside the truck.

You shouldn't have that issue, since you're going cat-back. I wouldn't know what it sounds like with a cat, but it will probably be even more quiet than mine. Depending on where you live, perhaps you could ditch the cat?

I don't know if I'd bother with 5" from the muff back. It won't gain you a thing and may cause more drone. Mine does that "wheeze" thing too but it's nothing. Probably won't have it with the cat. I sold my Banks muff to DieselDan and just ran the Aeroturbine behind the downpipe with straightpipe the rest of the way. Now I REALLY like that! ;)

Thanks! If the 5" does not do anything for me, I will probably go with the 4". I am really concerned with the sound. I know a lot of people like them loud, I do like my Harley that way. I drive from California to Phoenix area a couple of times a month and my cousins Hemi sounds ridiculous with that drone sound. Then I also heard the Magnaflow was the quietest..... hopefully I get more feedback, it is always better to hear peoples experience with the products..... thanks again.

I have a magnaflow and have taken the cat off. It is very loud inside the cab when I'm pulling. So I had the guys put a resinator on, that helped a little but still too loud when pulling. I'm looking to go another direction, just don't know which one yet. Any suggestions? I will sacrafice loudness outside the truck for a quiet ride inside

I have had the Banks Monster Exhaust 4" cat back for about 7000 miles now. I am satisfied with it. It is high quality stainless. Completely bolt up using all factory brackets. The sound is just loud enough to tell the difference, but not to loud. It is a little noisy when accelerating with a load, but mellows out once you are at speed. No drone at any rpm.

The only complaint I have is the 5" tip, it is straight cut, I wish it was angle cut. Just a cosmetic thing with me.

I have the full Turbo back Banks with power elbow, love the sound, not to loud, just a little "THROATIER". Nice easy install to all existing hardware, cut tip would have been nice, but still like it. Ran the same exhaust on my '01 6spd

sweet low $ 4 inch exhaust...

this is what i have done to my 99 dually, my 2004. 5 sb,srw and my buddys 2004. 5 sb,srw,2x2: we start bu using the walker muffler aquired at napa(part number 21471) and a lenth of 4 inch od exhaust pipe. (for a short bed with stock exhaust you will need 50 inches of pipe). we get a 4 inch id to 4 inch id exhaust adapter. first step is to cut the exhaust off right after the front crossmember in front of the cat. jack the passanger side up as much as possible and pull the whole exhaust out. all you need is the tail pipe. once the tailpipe is seperated from the old schoolbus muffler attach it to the walker muffler going in the right direction. put the muffler and tailpipe back under the truck and support the tailpipe with the rear hanger and the muffler with a jackstand. there will be a short piece of pipe directly over the front crossmember that needs to be removed to attach the 4 inch adapter. get the adapter on and clamped measure between the adapter and muffler with extra to fit onside the 2 ends and cut your pipe. slide the system together and clamp everything. this exhaust is awsome! outside the truck sound is loud and proud. even my wife likes it! inside exhaust note is deeper but not louder. no drone whatsoever. this muffler is 36 inches long and about8-9 inch in diameter. if you guy's are complaning about other mufflers, try this one out. napa price(with a account) is $86! you wont be disappointed. the best thing is most napa's will have them in stock or get it from their warehouse the next day! good luck... ... james :D

Exhaust System Feed Back Request

Thank you for your feedback on the Banks exhaust system. It is very helpful as I am looking at replacing the stock system on my 05.

A brief recap: The Banks exhaust has a throatier sound but none of you have noticed a drone (unloaded). How about when you are pulling a load? Do you have an exhaust drone at highway speeds (1800-2400 rpm's)?

The Donaldson muffler appears to give similar performance and is much less expensive. Is the Donaldson aluminized or stainless (409 or 304) steel? Also, how much survery is required to make the Donaldson muffler fit?

Do any of you have a sound recording of either the Banks or Donaldson set ups?

I'm going to hijack again.

Who here has left their cat straight piped it or used a straight through muffler? Experiences/opinions?

Anecdotal evidence suggest that the Magnaflow material is superior. I've read of Banks exhausts corroding very early.

Of course, ANY 304 system is going to be about the most durable at any price. Quality of 409 Stainless varies.

I'd go with Magnaflow over Banks. I DO prefer the Banks downpipe design-- full 4" and gradual transition.
