Some of you fellows have stated, you have magnets on the oil pan or a magnetic plug.
What do you think about putting the magnets on the oil filter? Bad idea? It makes sense to remove as much of the metal circulating in the oil.

Bert,I think it's a good idea,I do it on my tractor hydraulic filters. You can buy premade magnets to go on your filters and pay too much or go to a shop that makes magnetic door signs and buy strip magnets for much less.

Good idea on putting magnets on the oil filter. I think I'll do that and keep my ring magnet on the pan.

Thanks for the responses. This site has a wealth of information from people that have been there and done that.

Illflem, good point, I will go the least expensive way.

Wiredawg, I would be interested in finding out if the magnets on the filter keeps it off of the pan magnet. Fill us in as to the results. Probably collect in both places.

I went to a sign shop and asked for some magnetic sign material, after explaining that I was going to put a strip around my oil filter and some on my oilpan, the guy said great idea and gave me some. He said that he would give it a try as well.

Did this 20,000 miles ago and still working great!!!

One thing that I always do on my trucks is take an old stereo magnet and let it stick to the oil pan... . no problem with clearance with my present 4x4... . a lot stronger magnetic pull than anything else I've tried in the past. I just pull it off when changing the oil (hot) and the shavings just flow right out (hopefully not too many of them there in the first place).

Duckhunter,What I found putting a magnet on the bottom of the oilpan is that the pan becomes magnetic and doesn't release the partials,if there are any. You can check if this is happening by placing some metal grindings or even dirt in the area on the outside where the magnet was and seeing if they stick. It's probably no big deal anyway, I'd rather have the metal partials stuck in the bottom of the pan than circulating with the oil. Having the magnet on the filter is nice because they get thrown away with the filter, you know they're gone.

I've also wondered if using magnets effects oil analysis.

Magnets will have zero effect on oil analysis and no negative effect on the oil. There is nothing in the oil that is 'magnetic'.

I question the effectiveness of using magnetic sign material - just not a strong enough magnet to work on the other side of the oil pan or oil filter. Just my personal opinion.
I use a purpose built unit from One Eye Industries out of Canada called 'The Bear Claw'. Very strong focused magnets on the oil filter.

Redram,

I like the idea of the Bear Claw oil filter magnet. Their website is not very helpful as to model number for our trucks. Do you know what number would apply to a '95?

Thanks
