On 16 December my wife, six month old daughter, our eight year old Golden Retriever, and I were involved in a serious accident on US Highway 287 eight miles northwest of Childress, Texas. We were minding our own business, cruising happily in our new to us truck, when two wayward high schoolers smashed into us while attempting to overtake us in the passing lane. Luckily for us (and them) my wife and daughter made it out of the crash with no injuries. However our dog fled the scene and we have not seen her since. The investigators determined the kids were 100% liable.

Glad everyone in the truck was Ok! Dog is probably headed home. Truck looks likes a mess but as long as frame isn't messed up should be fixable.

I know right where that is. Very near to my homestead. Glad all is OK, good luck with the truck and the dog.

I'm sorry you had the misfortune of being on the highway with a couple of young fools like that. I'm most saddened by what happened to your poor scared, bewildered dog. I hope someone finds her and contacts you.

Thank god you didnt go through the guard rail and over the edge. Our family would be at a loss without ourlab, hopefully you guys are reunited before christmas. Did she have tags on her?

Damn, I am not sure which is more heart rending, the truck or the dog? I am sure dog owners will understand. Thank God you guys are ok! Unless it had super low miles, I would bet a fair sum she is totaled.

Glad you and your family are OK but I fear the truck may have frame damage in back. The saddest part is about your dog, I sure hope you get her back.

I don't know where you let your dogs ride but I used to let them ride in the back, tethered by a leash. That is until I was riding in another truck, dogs in back but in dog boxes and tied down with buckles. We got hit in the driver side and flipped onto the passenger side (my side). The dogs were bruised but intact and stayed with the vehicle. From then on, my dogs only travel in a crate/dog box.

Most importantly, glad you and your family are safe.

Glad to hear you guys are Ok! I am a dog guy and sure hope your puppy makes it home soon! Let us know will you?

Good to hear all the people are ok. I know I would miss my Golden way more than the truck. Good luck getting your golden back. Till you have been owned by one you just don't know how special they are

Wow sure am glad you'll all alright! That looks like a pretty scary drop. . Not sure how you could keep your cool after loosing your dog. . To me that's almost like loosing a child. . I the end a truck can be replaced, family can not. . Don't forget to keep checking with the local humain society. Best of luck

Dang, what were the kids driving? Is your right rear tire under the guard rail?!

Nike, They were driving a Toyota Tacoma. It was lifted and had oversized tires on it. Apparently they were traveling 10mph over the speed limit of 75 mph. We were traveling at 70mph.

She was definitely scared. I'm fairly certain she was in full fight-or-flight mode.

We are all extremely grateful the guardrail did exactly what it was designed to! Haley did indeed have her tags on and she has an I. D chip.

The truck was in my possession for a week and a half and only had 20,095 mile when I picked it up. I'll keep you posted on what the insurance company decides.

Our dog was in the rear of the cab. The window on the drivers side shattered and as soon as the truck came to a stop she hopped out and ran like she'd never ran before!

:-laf Yep. I hear ya!

GCP, let us know if you find your dog.

I will keep everyone up to date on our dog, the trucks fate, and anything else that might come up. We have placed an add in the Childress newspaper, made an announcement on live radio, alerted the town vet, and been in contact with a local dog club - via Facebook - who are out actively searching for our pup. With any luck she'll turn up. A BIG thank you to everyone who has posted. I appreciate everyone's well wishes.

Sure glad you guys were ok. I really hope you find your dog soon. I am a dog person and can feel your sense of loss. Surely you will find it soon. Sounds like you have taken all the right steps for a successful recovery. They are like one of your kids!!! SOFTAILER

So sorry to hear about the crash neighbor and the loss of your dog. Hope you get him back. Sure happy none of you got hurt.

It's official: the truck will be repaired. After several conversations with the owner of a paint and body shop in Vernon, Texas I feel extremely confident that the truck will be returned to its original luster. I will be getting an entirely new bed, two new driver's side doors, and a new floor and corner piece spliced into the rear driver's side of the cab. Mechanically speaking, I'll get a new passenger side rear spring pack, two new rear wheels, and four new tires. Throw on some new paint and a dozen or so other odds-and-ins and she should be ready within a fortnight.

I would insist on two spring packs. Start off with two new ones instead of one that was used for 20,000 miles and an accident, and a new one.
