I am posting this for a friend who is not (yet) a member (I keep trying).

He has a '98 4X4 auto with the 180 hp pump. His mods include a motorhome plate that we're guessing is roughly equivalent to a TST #8 or #6, a 4" exhaust, a 16cm exhaust housing (but still using his stock HX35), a 3K GSK from Piers, and a Scotty II for air. His timing is set at about 16*+.

Early this spring he installed a set of 370 diamond Bs from Piers. Those immediately caused the engine to lope a little at idle, like the governor wasn't able to keep things smooth. The idle dropped a little, too. He adjusted the pre-load screw in a tad on the AFC diaphram, and that helped (brought up the idle and smoothed out the lope). But lately, as its gotten real hot here this past week (tomorrow will be like our 9th day above 100*) and he's using the A/C, the lope has gotten real bad. The engine will die while maneuvering around in parking lots. He's getting frustrated and looking for solutions.

I suggested turning the retainer nuts on the governor springs in about 1 click to put more preload on the springs to see if that helps.

Any others have this symptom and got it worked out?

Thanks,

-Jay

It sounds like the idle speed is to low. Adjust the idle to 850 rpm while in gear and with the a/c turned on. See if this solves the problem. If adjusting the idle rpm doesn't cure the problem I would start looking into getting the P7100 to a pump stand for calibration.

First, get your friend to caugh up the $35 so we don't poke too much fun at him (like this).

So he can afford the truck AND the mods but a membership to the best source of information is too much $ for him? :p

First, do what R. ebel suggested with the idle setting. If that doesn't fix it, the GSK retainers should be set to 2 clicks +-1 click.

This first one is a freebie. Next time he's got to PAY!!

Extreme1,

Yeah, I know. He lurks in here all the time. I sent him a link to this thread so he can watch it, so rib him good. It's a minor annoyance considering all the good info he gets (hear that Lon?) :p

Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone else?

Update

He tightened the retainer nut on the gov. springs a click or two. That improved things by at least 90%, he says. He'd already turned up the idle screw shortly after putting in the injectors (I didn't know/remember) and didn't want to go higher.

Thanks all.

Does installing delivery valves help a 180 hp auto pump?

I know pepole have success clearing a lope on the 215 pumps and the older 160 pumps.

Personally, I don't approve tightening the governor spring setting. The throttle gets touchy and the flutter or bounce gets annoying.

Paying the $35 should make it run perfect. Of course if it doesnt there is a lot of very smart folks here that are very willing to help.

Seen this problem in the shop a few times.

I would suggest that your friend lossen off the inj lines at the injectors and re-install each line making sure the bore end of each line is pointed straight down into the injector before tightening the line nut onto the inj.

Its common to have bent the line slightly when changing out injectors.

Bend the line slightly with a cresent wrench just before the line nut if nessasary.

JohnE,

He has considered the delivery valves and I believe he's talked to Al at PDR about it. At this point, he's not convinced with his set-up that the cost-benefit is worth it. Perhaps in the future.

Since he has the GSK, I would allow that turning the retainer nuts one or 2 clicks would be an acceptable adjustment given that the kit has changed the spring rates over stock. As it turns out, this has done the trick and not caused any problems with the throttle.

Nascar Mark,

Your suggestion about the injector lines is a new one on me! But, hey, I'm no expert! I'll keep this in mind if he mentions any more problems. I'll also pass the idea along and have him check them.

Thanks, guys.

Oh boy......

I wonder if my lines are bent..... causing my NASTY idle, etc.

The odd part is that the idle comes and goes... . sometimes its smooth... . other times it's choppy as a prep-cook on speed. (That was bad..... :) )
