Hi All,

I've got a 98. 5 24 valve with about 85K miles on it. at about 75K miles, I upgraded the transmission to a DTT with their valve body, torque converter, and billet input shaft.

My truck is now making some noise that I haven't heard before. It seem like when I'm off the gas and slowing down... as the transmission shifts from 3rd to 2nd or 2nd to 1st, it sounds like the engine gets real loud. That's about the best way I can describe it... a good bit louder rattle than normal.

Any ideas where I can even start to look on this ? It's only done it once before that I noticed and that was about a week ago. I noticed it several times on decel on the way to work today.

If anyone can point me in a direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

--Phil

First thing that comes to mind is a loose mount somewhere, either engine or trans. Something may be torquing over on decel and causing a different noise.

Far as that goes, it could be a u-joint or carrier bearing going out too.

more info

I took the truck out yesterday towing a flat bed trailer and it did fine for the hour ride out to where we were goin and all the way until I got back home... then the noise started up again.

Now it's making the noise in Neutral and Park too while at idle. I crawled under the truck and the noise seems to be coming from near where the transmission and engine meet... torque converter maybe ?

Still sounds like a rattle... but with somewhat of a metallic ping to it

For those of us who don't work on our trucks every day, what's a flex plate ? I assume it's part of the transmission and would guess it has something to do with the Torque Converter...

Am I close ?

I talked to Laser Bob, my DTT installer and he though it could be the torque converter bolts had loosened up. He said that happened to his truck too and the symptoms sound very similar.

He explained to me what the flex plate was, so I've got that part.

I think I'll have a local transmission shop at least check the torque converter bolts ASAP...

Problem Solved

I took the truck into a local transmission shop and they got it fixed...

Loose Torque Converter bolts and $40 to fix it.

Thanks for all the input.
