I am thinking about swapping an auto. in for my 5 spd. The truck is 2wd. Has anyone done one and can give me some pointers on it. thanks

Lance

PM "BigPapa" he converted his 95(I think?) 2wd 2500 from auto to a 5spd.

I wish I had the $$$ to convert my truck to a fully built Goerend transmission! :{ :(

No need to Pm me. :)

I'm not 100% sure but I think you will need the following:

  • An auto transmission of course, the 47RH variety, which you'll only find in a '94-'95.
  • A torque converter.
  • transmission lines.
  • A transmission cooler.
  • I'm not sure on the heat exchanger.
  • A steering column.
  • Probably a PCM or ECM or whatever it's called from an auto.
  • A flex plate.
  • Some drive shaft work.
  • The yoke for the auto.
  • Some pedals unless you just want to take the clutch pedal out and use the little brake pedal.
  • Some wiring work.
  • A patch for the big hole in your floor.
  • And if you want to do it right, an instrument panel from an auto.

I think you can use the same cross-member, we just turned mine around, but I'm not sure about the rear mount. I'm sure I've forgotten something important. :-laf

I would suggest either building the auto or buying a built one. I think I read somewhere that ATS has a "kit". Could've been one of the other builders, though.

I'm sure you could find someone with the auto that wants the 5-speed that would swap with you. That would be your best bet.

Good luck,

Scott

Hey Scott my Fiance is looking at a 96 2500 identical to mine but auto :D

To bad A) She is currently unemployed & B) We would still have to sell her car before we could buy this truck. :{ :{ :{

That would be nice... . just call Dave order some parts..... call peter swap for a single disk for her..... have a LONG weekend with Crazy Cuz Dilbert & a few other buddies under both! :-laf

I recently converted mine from an auto to manual. If I could figure out how to post in the classifieds I would list the parts. I also have a new never installed ATS triple lok torque converter. I would even travel a fair distance to trade steering colums if someone is interested. My truck is a 4 wheel drive. I don't know if the tail piece on a 47RH can be changed or not

Are you speaking from experience? I see you swapped a 6-speed for the auto.

Bigpapa, I found a 94 parts truck close by that i'm getting all the parts i need. crossmember, driveshaft, cooler, lines but i wasnt sure if i'd need a pcm or ecm if i use an rh instead of an re. I've had a built re in the past. As far as the column and floor hole goes, i am gonna keep my column and put a ratchet shifter on the floor with a button on the handle for OD. I just need to find out about the pcm thing.

thanks,

Lance

Lance,

I'd suggest you contact Jim Leonard. He goes by "Dieseldemon" on here. I think he has a website and phone number in the "Links" section. He is THE man to answer your question.
