It gives the best reading from preturbo. Post turbo can be off as much as 500 degrees. If your a stock engine. It wouldn't matter to much. If the screws have been turned go preturbo.
I know some old timers (truckers and truck mechanics) who swear you can break off the tip of the t-couple and trash your turbo. I still maintain what I read here- if you have chunks taking out your probe, you have bigger issues. Same for burning off the tip- it is rated to something obscene like 2500deg. go preturbo, esp with a mechanical pump- way too tempting to mess wtih, and I have seen 450deg differences under load.
