Simple fact is you lose more boost between shifts with a stick truck.
I had an Audi TT 225. with that car, it was kinda goofy, depending on h ow fast I would shift, the ECU would cut boost. prolly 25% of the time I would have to regain boost between shifts. But when it did keep boost, I could hear 4 perlli 6000's squeel a little (1st-2nd gear) and shove the passengers head into the head rest.
As for my truck, I'm able to chirp the tires between every gear except grabbing 6th. Granted it's not easy on things, and I think I killed my throw out barring over this. I don't think I loose boost. in fact with the butt dyno, it feels as strong as a pull the second I shift into and out of every gear, errr I don't feel turbo lag at all.
I think the problem with most of your manual drivers is that you can't shift fast enuough to compete with an auto. And I'm not dissing you guys. But I have ran into many people that are "power shifting" but seem to me like what I I would consider just a basic fast shift to make a sudden move in t raffic.
I don't think the average automatic trans has much more then a TOTAL after 5 gears have been changed of . 200 of a second advanage . maybe even less. Now add in the slushyness of a torque converter, and you gain . 300 on the manaul or more. Basicly, the manual should always win given equal HP, so long as you work that manaul.
Buddy of mine put it best "Shifting your truck is like rowing a boat" .
BTW, I ran a 16. 5 with 100% stock truck with a 4x4 launch, tail gate off, low fuel light on, prolly at about 7100 pounds.
