Just curious here. How hard is it to convert a truck from a 6 speed to an auto? Are there any computer conflicts etc? Would it be easier to just start with a new truck?

Any input would be appreciated.

I don't know if the are any serious conflicts with the computers or not, but I would wager that you would get a lot of "takers" of your 6 speed ,clutch pedal, clutch housing, and all of your other manual related items. From a working truck standpoint, the change from automatic to manual is much desired. The change would probably work without any computer changes but it might set off some codes.

I would say trade it in, go for an auto truck.

But, if you have plenty of time and money do the conversion if your into projects.

That six speed transmission you have is a hot commodity, you will find someone to trade with easily if you want. You will need to swap the PCM as well as the rest of the hard parts.

I'm not into any projects right now. I am wanting an auto because of knee surgery. Can't use the clutch without pain now, and I still need to drive. However I have lots of $$ into BOMBing my current truck and only 20K miles on it. Dealer was going to give me a ratty deal on a trade in, and my injectors, comp, exhuast, intake... ... ... etc won't work on a new 03 rig. Suppose I could keep the HX40 though but thats about it hence the interest in this conversion.

Like LSmith says..... You should be able to find someone that will be willing to swap you straight across. Don't pay any money for it.

you're in Canada!

I've been thinking about making the swap for a while, but my current setup isn't too bad for an auto. I've got the DTT VB and TC and it works pretty well.

If someone was close, and we had lots of help, we could easily do the swap in a weekend. Too bad you're not closer... ... .

Heads up!

If you swap trannies, you'll have to get a PCM (or swap it, too) as well. The manual trans PCMs are different than the auto trans PCMs.

Auto to Manual Swap

If you can wait for me to buy a truck with an Auto then I would be very willing to trade it out for a Manual and the auto trucks are easier to find.

PM me if you get an auto truck, I may be interested in going stickless if I had the cash to upgrade the trans at the same time. I've got a 5 speed with a SBC Con OFE in front. And, I'm pretty darn close to ya.

I've been thinking of doing the same swap due to my right shoulder and neck pain while on my last trip.

I'd rather find a doctor that can fix my shoulder then give up my stick though!

At the same time I think the truck is developing clutch or pilot bearing trouble, and it does have the notchy shifting third gear synchro.
