I know It's not usually nesessary to have a trans temp guage on a manual trans. But with the hauling I do It nice to have an I on things. I finally got an EGT Gauge. boost and Trans Temp gauge. Anyways recently I was hauling a stepvan on my 32' gooseneck and after about 30 miles the temp guage was running 250-260 and I have fast coolers from Geno's. but I don't know if there is a max temp on Manual gear oil. Since I havn't seemed to have any problems from before I had the gauges. I'm assuming that is alright. any Idea's would be appreciated.

Depends on the oil, but most "boutique oils" are good for around 300*F.

I have yet to really tow anything, but yesterday my max temp at 75mph and 85*F outside was 170*F.

FWIW, I didn't even reach your numbers before the fast coolers when towing upwards of 6k.

infared temp tool

I check mine once and a while with a infared gun. I have never seen mine that high before. I have the trans coolers too. I think 210-220 was high, that towing a 15,000# 5th wheel.

For what its worth, my trans and rear end are usually within 15 degrees of each other.

I also learned that the stock steel r/end cover and Mag hytec run about the same temp. i tested those on a 800 miles tow with the infared gun too.

PS: the infared gun is great for checking tire temps too. That pretty much tells ya if you got a tire low on air or somethings wrong. . Almost a must have for me now.

I only wanted to add that you might want to confirm, by some other method, that your trans is running that hot... might be a bad sending unit or grounding issue...

Mopar from the dealer. I know the first time it went that hot I was towing an old uhaul box with junk in it that the crane operator said it weighed 10000# plus my gooseneck at 8000# for a total of 18000# the second time I was hauling a panel van like an old catering truck. Not sure what it weighed but both gave me high wind resistance. so I don't know. I'll have to check with a infered gun to see if it 's a bad sending unit. but if 300 then i pry don't need to worry. I just don't want problems

Is your transmission getting hot enough where you can feel the heat by the cup holders. I towed about 8,000#'s from new mexico to california, and i could put a cold drink in my cup holder, and about an hour later it was pretty dam warm. I dont know if that is normal, as i have never towed that far before. But i do know it heated up quite a bit.
