Checked the transmisison fluid the other day for the first time. Noticed that the plug was only threaded into the transmisison about 2-3 threads. The rest of the plug was rusted and would not go in. Sprayed some penetrating fluid on the plug before removed it just in case it was already rusted hard and fast! Did not have any problem when removed it.

Should this plug be more flush? Have a '81 Chevy Luv, with the Diesel 2. 2L, and the plug on this transmission is flush tight. Should remove the plug, clean up the threads and then install it as far as it will go? Would this lead to possible interference with the gears in the transmission?

Is there a better method of changing the fluid than removing the most bottom bolt of the PTO cover and letting the fluid drain through the bolt hole? How long does it take to drain doing ti this way? Could the concept of the easy oil drain plug be applied here somehow?

My trans fill plug does not go in flush either. Alot of thread sticks out. I think the fill hole is a pipe thread. It tapers down. This is why the plug gets tight without being threaded in very far. I don't think it would contact anything if overtightened, but just tighten till its good & snug.

Pull the P. T. O cover completely off and replace it with Geno's Manual Transmission Filter.

I have had mine on for 3 years now. I have changed the element twice. It really catches alot of crud. I put a strong magnet on the inside of the mounting plate. Its cheap insurance.

The magnet idea is really a good one. I just recently installed the

filter kit from Geno's. I won't know how well it works until I change it out.

Manual Transmission Plug

That picture of the Geno's kit sure looks good! Since there are two PTO covers, will probably instlall it on the same side as the fill plug. Thanks for the suggestion!

Rhanes,

The directions from Geno's garage specifies that it should be installed on the passenger side. I think it has to do with the way the gear oil will be slung.

The fill plug is on the driver side.
