Changed the Manual transmission fluid in my truck yesterday. Used Royal Purple (Im not starting an oil debate here guys). The transmission was overfilled so someone changed the fluid early b/c it only has 60k on the truck. I Used the oem amount of fluid now 5th gear has a very quiet rattle. Ill probably be the only one that notices it but its driving me crazy!

What Royal Purple did you use?

The NV4500 should be a 75w90... if you used 75w90, then its likely the previous overfill was muffling the noise.

Do a search... .

Someone here had a scare using Royal Purple in their 56 honey. Why didn't you use OEM:confused:

Mac:cool:

2003/nv4500: should be 75w90...

There is nothing wrong with Royal Purple gear oil, I've used it a lot. Their SynchroMax is a little too thin for the NV5600, the reason it works for some and not others.

I thought all the 4500's were long gone by 2003:confused:

I mean the 01 I test drove some years back had a 56'er under there!!!

I was told its the 4500. It's a 5spd. My big question is why is It rattilingg. Is it because it was over filled before and now it's not????

As I already stated, the overkill was probably muffling the noise... as long as the old fluid drained clean, I would not worry about it. My dad's nv4500 has had a 5th gear harmonic for well over 200k.

I would have used OEM oil. Probably, your 5th gear has a little play causing the rattle. Try not to lug it so it won't get worse.

Yea if i hold the gear shift in one particular place (far in the right corner) of 5th gear it stops. The transmission fluid was not too bad still looked kinda clean, it did have white in it though, not like a milky white, more like some of it was burnt????

well the NV4500's did have a problem with the 5th gear nut coming loose, possible the rattiling is an early sign. I used RP in my G56 with good luck, use it my PS system, highly doubt that is any part of the problem

Talked to a buddy of mine that is a diesel mechanic on big trucks. He said that the overfill from before was probibly hiding the noise. He said the noise wouldn't be the nut but that the previous owner probably drove with his hand resting on 5th gear causing premature wear causing the noise now

I never owned one with an NV-4500 but I believe the fifth gear nut often backed off on all of them, 2wd or 4wd.
