I have a 96 1ton dually with a 4:10 rear end and a GearVendors aux. trans. behind the transfer case. I have a 5 speed manual trans. that has had the main shaft and 5th gear replaced probably about 100K miles ago. I am not having any problems with either one. The truck has over 200K miles and is going strong. I am the only driver. I have always noticed that a 40 mile trip will not heat the transmission up enough for it to push the needle on the gauge off of the peg. A 200 mile trip might register just a little, but not much. If I pull a trailer of course it will heat up to 180 degrees. I have seen it up close to 200 degrees a time or two but it was in the summer and working hard. My question is, how hot is too hot for the transmission?

Not sure what is too hot. Am running similar setup pulling too much and have not worried about trans temp. Think the Fast Coolers may help a little. Have had them for several years. No transmission temp gauge though.

transmission temp

well my transmission has not seen 200 yet but here in idaho we do have some hills i have pulled a 30' gooseneck packing a backhoe around and still didnt pass 180 mind that i have not pulled hard in the summer i think when you start hiting 260 id worrie you can melt them my buddy has melted 2 nv4500 in a 6 month strech but he was pulling a 25' inclosed 500 miles a night and never did have a transmission temp but that will be one of his next up grades just my 2 cents

Have a gauge on my 6 speed and ran it on the 5 speed. Both run about the same temp. Truck has over 300K and it has never changed. On a warm day, such as today, it will go to 225. Outside temp. was 90 and was pulling 36 ft. gooseneck, not loaded very heavy but at a steady 70 mph for several hours. Tonight on the way home it cooled down to 200. In real hot weather, grossing 33,000 lbs. , I have seen 250 after a hard pull on the interstate. Both transmissions ran about the same temp. , and I haven't had any problems. I run the 10w30 synthetic engine oil but will soon try the new Amsoil that is supposed to be for the NV-5600. The manuals will take more heat than the automatics.

Thanks to all of you that replied. I will not worry about the temp until it gets to 250 and then I'll give it a break.

As for as where Beckville Tx. is located, it is in East Texas, 135 miles east of Dallas, 30 miles south of Longview on highway 149. Population about 732. One red light. Two gas stations. Not one good place to eat.

Grew up in Upshur county, left in '61. Probably only 50 miles nw of you. Where I am now has two red lights, numerous gas stations, and no good place to eat. This hill country is hard to beat for a good place to live!

I grew up here and have a nice farm that I am the 5th generation to own. I really enjoy my tractors and trucks and the opportunity to work for myself. It is the only place that would ever feel like home to me but if I didn't have this farm I would not live here.
