I posted something in the shop section, however, i believe this is 911 worthy. I have a 99 3500 dually, 24 valve, automatic transmission. Here are the problems: when I brake, the truck steers hard to the right. Also, when I turn right, something sounds like it is rumbling or scratching real bad. Number three, when I go over bumps, hte truck rumbles the same way. My brake and ABS lights are coming on and off speratically and I dont know why. My driver side front tire is wearing out really bad on the inside of the tread. I dont know why this is all happening but it just started happening last night. I have really driven it since for fear of it falling apart. I need serious advice.

Carl,

The initial problem sounds like the brake pads have worn, and you are getting metal to metal contact. It may also explain the brake/ABS lights.

As for tire wear, it could be coincidental that you need a front-end alignment. Less likely but possible would be that the calipers are not working smoothly - often the pins or the cup will become corroded and the brakes won't release completely, causing accelerated wear on the pads/rotors. I suppose it could create enough drag to affect the tire, but I'd ask the shop to check alignment when doing the brakes.

Either way - a good brake job should fix it. I just did mine; the caliper assemblies were $28 each at Costs-less.

If you're not the DIY type - Less Schwab typically replaces the calipers with a brake job. I've found them to be a "little uneven" in their work though, so ask around for a shop with a good reputation.

With the ABS light and noises you describe I would check your wheel bearings. I have replaced a number of cassette style wheel bearings on cars and trucks that exhibit exactly what you describe. Jack the front end up and check for play / looseness, there shouldn't be any.

Wheel bearings.

I am thinking wheel bearings / brakes combination. My wife lost a wheel bearing on her 2000. This caused the brakes to fail on that wheel and eat up pads and rotor. Very ugly and fairly expensive to fix. We had Sears automotive department do the work and were very pleased (I was surprised).

Good luck!
