Thanks to all on this site that have helped a new guy with his maintenance needs. I am looking at getting four guages for my truck ('06 3500 dually with 4. 10 auto). Looking at EGT, Trans, Rear diff temp and Boost. It seems that taking off the exhaust manifold would be the proper way to go about installing the EGT for a pre-turbo install. Agree or have any better ideas?



The Trans is going pre-cooler and is going through a coupler (Genos's or Diesel Manor). This seems pretty common sense (or is it?).



The rear diff will be installed when I get a M. H cover. Again seems to be pretty much common sense (or is it?).



The Boost has me perplexed. Where do you tap the turbo? Easy, hard, skill level required?



I know a lot of you very experienced guys are rolling your eyes at this point, but remember... we all started somewhere. Any and all help is very much appreciated. I believe in working on one's own vehicle. That, and I don't really trust dealerships with my expensive investment.

the boost gauge is the easiest to install. Take off the intake horn, drill and tap a hole, screw in the adapter and run the line.

The best place for the EGT is in the manifold. Now the million dollar question is do you monitor the front or back half? Most get temps from the back side of the motor because of the lacking coolant flow in that part of the motor.

I don't think you have to remove the manifold to drill it. I just used grease on the drill bits (I started small, then drilled to tap size), then used a pencil magnite to pick up what was missed. Grease on the tap, pencil magnite again. After installing the probe, started and let it idle... any particle I missed were blown out the exhaust. That was a lot of miles ago, no problems!

If you order the gauges through Geno's they will come with instructions. There is no reason to remove any manifolds to do any of the installations. Drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold is pretty easy and straightforward. Using grease on the bit and tap will keep most of the bits out of the manifold. The magnet will get some more and the rest will harmlessly blow out the exhaust. I have never heard of it being a problem and it has been done many thousands of times by members here.



Boost is taken through a hollow replacement intake manifold bolt. You unscrew one near the valve cover and screw the hollow one supplied by Geno's back in that hole, hook up the hose and go.



I would probably go with a trans temp sensor in the pan. I tried an inline one from Mass Diesel on two of my trucks and never had consistent or what I think were accurate readings. The oil flow is a little complex on these trucks and I don't think that line sees consistent flow. The sensor in the pan will work for sure.



From what I have seen here, it is unlikely that you will ever need to worry about the rear diff temp. They just don't get that hot, they already run synthetics and it is a very durable rear end. It might be neat to know but it isn't necessary IMO.



I might go for a rail pressure gauge instead, especially if you have or plan any mods.

Don't even bother with drilling/tapping the intake horn. Get a boost bolt from Geno's. So much easier. I used to have my EGT gauge reading post turbo. I moved it to pre-turbo in the rear half of the exh. manifold. I could not believe how differently they registered. So, I think pre-turbo is the way to go. You can find some good pictures on here where to place it if you search for it. I agree that it's no necessary to remove the exhaust maifold to do so. I just greased the drill bit and left the motor running. The exhaust pressure blew out the pieces when it poked through. Just watch your eyes!
