Ain't this some bull

Are there any differences between the Marine block and the truck block for the Cummins 5. 9? Any reason to choose one over the other when building a new motor?

Chris

i would look on the cummins web site. they have all there engine broken down into what they are for. dodge,marine... ... i hope this helps.

I believe there are differences but the info I have has only come from TDR Rumors

I heard the Common-Rail engines in our Rams weigh a whopping 150-200 pounds more than the previous 24-valve because off the stiffer block and mains girdle  From a strength standpoint I would say a HO or '600' block would be the way to go if you don't mind a couple hundred extra pounds over the front axle.

Vaughn,

Some things you hear are rumors... but some of the stuff is true.

Not everyone can know... .....

The CR blocks will not mix with 2nd gen gear cases, cams, etc.

Thanks, guys,

I searched the Cummins site and all over the internet and still can't find any definite differences. I've heard there was a block switch in mid-'97 to a stronger design, but other than that, I don't know... .

Still trying to figure out which block to base a high-power motor off of.

Chris

I think that switch your talking about was in 98 to the 53 Block casting. Which was not stronger but was a thinner casting and had a cracking problem on the right side of the block just below the soft plugs. Stay away from the 53 block castings.

Actually, I think it was a different switch. I've heard them referred to as '97. 5-up "Storm" blocks before - I think that was on Haisley's site, if memory serves. Have you ever heard of this before?

Chris

Do a SEARCH on 53 blocks. You'll find lots of reading here. They came out in 98. I've heard of the Storm Blocks but when I asked about them at Cummin's N. W. (parts and service) they didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

Yeah, I've read up on the 53 blocks both here on on DTR before. I personally wouldn't buy a truck with one, but did you know Jim Fulmer has one?! I couldn't believe the power levels he got out of one!

Chris

I know the marine block is different and possibly the engine in a school bus is different..... because to my knowledge, there has never been (nor will be) a dowel pin issue in any Cummins engine setting in a bus. You never hear any of us meddling over what to do about a dowel pin. On the other hand... ..... do a search on this site for troubles with them found in the pickups:(
