With winter here. . and while reading about the various advantages of slghtly raising lube levels to help keep the "ole VP44 churning along to the Million Mile Mark. .

I took the advice of some Old Time Diesel Heads... and added a 16 ounces Of Marvel Mystery Oil to a full tank of Diesel...

(The label on the can said 4 OZ per 10 Gal... or 14 ounces total. . but I said what the hell). .

My observations...
1) No smoke... . differant smell. . but no smoke. .

2)QUIET IDLE!!!!LIKE BIG TIME!!!!

3)More quiet throughout the entire range. .

I have no EGT or Boost gauges. . so no data on those.

Now here is the prob... I must be imagining things... but I ve been driving around quite a bit... and I seem to be getting better mileage!!!

I didn't take readings at the fillup...
To be honest I didn't think that Marvel Mystery oil would have made a bit of differance at all. .

Now I'm kicking myself for not resetting the odometer at the fillup. !

So has anyone else tried this...

Other observations... Pros. . Cons...
Did I do a BAD thing???

So far things have improved... I may keep doing this from now on!!

Larry

I was thinking what a good idea, I have used marval mystery oil before in everthing with
a gas engine, and even in air tools, it works
great. I was at the local Napa parts store
and after reading your post was going to buy
a fresh bottle and put some in when I filled the tank. But I remembered I only have just over 3300 miles on the truck so I think I should wait until its good and broken in before adding any thing that might not let the rings seat. #ad

I add it to the gas in my 1970 Chevy 4x4 all the time to reduce spark knocking, but I don't think I would add it my diesel because it is RED. I don't know if it would affect the fuel color enough for the feds to get you or not. I'm sure it would be hard to explain. #ad

There is a very good diesel mechanic here in town that has always been high on Marvel Mystery Oil and/or Rislone. He reccommends adding a tad to the fuel. But I recall in an earlier edition of the TDR that Mr. Patton said something to the effect... "I would'nt add anything to my diesel fuel-injection system that has the word 'mystery' in it. " So who knows? I always added some to my '95... . every tank of fuel. I kept a little squirt bottle in my toolbox and fired a little in every tank. Truck ran great for 100k before I got my '99. FWIW.

I was reading this post the other day and figured I would give it a try. The truck seems to run smoother and a little better fuel milage. It works better than powerservice and it's a little cheaper.

Any more new info from you members out there using the marvel mystery oil? I have been using the power service additive for a few tanks, and think the truck makes more noise now! I think I will try a little mystery oil on the next tank and see what happens.

Been using it for over a year on the recommendation of Mike Primamore of AutoWurks Diesel in NJ. No noticeable difference in power, mileage or engine smoothness. Cold weather starting is a bit easier, perhaps due to small cetane increase. Added lubricity and injector cleaning seem worth the effort.

I just started searching for a good additive to better lubricate the pump etc. I added Marvel mystery oil yesterday, but haven't come to any conclusions yet. I also purchased 2-bottles of Redline's "Diesel Fuel Catalyst" and intend to try it. A local diesel mechanic recommended NAPA diesel fuel conditioner in the quart size blue bottle. The short and long of it is that I want an additive that will help insure my VP44 fuel pump lasts as long as the rest of the motor. Do any of you have any thoughts on any of the three products I mentioned? Costs are all about the same when you consider additive/gals diesel treated.

There are two good threads concerning MMO on the General Diesel Forum.
1. Marvel Mys. Oil
2. Checked for red fuel

Hope this helps. IMHO it is a good additive and I have been using it.

I know a lot of people swear by things like this, but I'll state my position with a short quote from the manual:

"not"

Mike,
If you follow the owners manual recommendations for lubes, maintainence schedules ect... your engine should last 300K miles.

If you don`t follow the owners manual and make your own maintainence schedules, tailored to your specific kind of driving, use high quality synthetic lubes & fuel pump lubricity additives... your engine will last 700K miles

D/C would gladly see you use the former. So you`ll be back to buy a new truck sooner! #ad

While at the meet in Tulsa, the Cummins guys said that "cummins now reccomends and addative about every other tank" or close to this. The Cummins reps distributed about a case of addative to us (via drawings). So... I will "NOT" drive mine w/o an addative. Rather be safer on the lube side then sorry on the dry side.

Just my 0. 02$ worth (agn)

I first encountered Marvel Mystery Oil in the early 60s while working a summer job in a gas station. One day, an old car pulled in, skipping and sputtering like it was on its dying stretch. The owner begged for help, and an old mechanic there grabbed a can of Marvel Mystery Oil and dumped it down the carb!
After the smoke finally cleared, this hunk of junk sat there and purred like a kitten.

Since this I have always been an advocate of Marvel Mystery Oil and yes, I do regularly use it in my Cummins HO just to give it any advantage I can !

I've used MMO off an on for a year or so. I've not noticed a difference in mileage but engine noise is slightly improved. I don't think it will hurt in any event. More often, I've noticed a reduction in engine noise with fuel from different stations.

As far as being red, don't you think that a quart of MMO in thirty five gallons of diesel will be pretty diluted?

Don't you remember pee'ing in the bathtub or wading pool as a kid? Well, I don't either but I'll bet it didn't make the water yellow for long #ad

I've used Power Services and I think it actually ran worse, it definitely stunk.

I'll try Stanadyne when I can find it locally; if it really makes a difference I'll continue using it. Otherwise, MMO works for now.

Hi Pete, I was at the Tulsa meet also. I have a '99' 2500 and the manual says no additives but the Cummins rep did say that they now recommend something with some lubrication in it. Up to that point I was not using anything. Of course he was selling Cummins brand, which is a little pricey. I use Lucas most of the time but I found some Slick 50 additive at the cheapo depot for $2. 50 a bottle so I'm using some of that now. I think it helped a little in the mileage dept. and seems to run a little smoother, but then again when I wash and wax it it seems to run better also

Here is a copy of what I posted a while back on the subject of pouring oils in the tank.

You are lowering the BTU of the fuel this way creating less heat in the combustion chamber. transmission fluids, and other oils contains detergents that varnish up when they burn. Ever see what varnish does to valves and piston rings? Just cook yourself up some transmission fluid or mystery oil in the skillet to see. See what is left after you get it to burn. The ash content alone is enough to carbon up your injector tips and exhaust valves and piston rings, let alone what the varnishing aspect is doing. All of this in a combustion chamber creating less heat spells trouble for the compression ignition engine.

I have seen "old timers" pour all kinds of stuff in diesel tanks. Back in W. W. II in the Pacific, they ran whatever they could through the diesels... coconut oil, fish oil, you name it, they ran it to get by, thus creating some of the modern "wives tales" we have today about diesel engines.

Back then an injection pump was machined with tolerances around . 001 of an inch. Today's injection pumps are machined up to . 000001 of an inch. Start running stuff through your injection pump other than what is designed to be ran thgrough it and things can get ugly. I know its been done, can be done etc, but I have seen what combustion chamber temps drop to dramaticaly from things like oil in the fuel.

With what is available today compared to the 1950-60's for diesel engines you have to sometimes look past the "old time" remedys and get with modern times. If you need lubrication for your diesel fuel, buy something formulated to do that job. Last time I checked a bottle of stanadyne fuel treatment that treated a couple hundred gallons of fuel was only $8.
