I've used MMO to loosen stuck parts, rusty bolts and other odd jobs, but never dumped it in a fuel tank. Same thing with ATF, motor oil, and a lot of the other stuff I hear people mention.

A lot of that stuff is not designed to burn and dumping it in an engine, can't be good for the engine, pumps or the injectors.

There's a lot of purpose designed stuff for diesel engines. Use it.

I have been using MMO since the 50's in all my vehicles and have had noting but good luck. In the 50's and 60's I raced sports cars and did my own mechanic work. When I took my engines apart for maint. They were as clean as a pin internally and showed next to no wear. I still use it and will always use it in all my engines, both in the fuel and added to the oil.

JUst had an Seminar on Outboard Motor Preventive Maintanence and he suggested that we use Marvel Mistery Oil in our Yamaha outboards instead of the Ring Free that Yamaha recommends.
I guess if it will work in my OB, it should work in my D/C.

JUst dumped some in today, will let you know.

Chad Sheets, Switca: MMO does indicate on the back label use in diesel fuel. I don't see how a few ounces of that stuff could lower BTU to any extent at all. MMO may seem like some sort of oil, but certainly doesn't resemble anything close to engine oil or ATF. Putting MMO in the tank isn't the same thing as carelessly dumping ATF or engine oil into the tank IMO.

MMO Combustion - Psuedo Scientific Test

FYI, since there seemed to be a lack of scientific data on the subject, and being a scientist at heart, I decided I would try to gather some empirical data.



I attempted to measure the amount of residual carbon / soot & visible smoke when burning various fuel + additive compositions. I also measured burn time of each mixture with the stopwatch function on my watch.



First straight # 2 diesel, then #2 + 2% by volume new motor oil (rotella), then #2 + 2% by volume 2-stroke petro oil (valvoline), then #2 + 2% by volume MMO.



My apparatus consisted of a suitable combustion vessel (cut-off aluminum beer can, Budweiser is what I had), a source of heat/ignition (propane torch), and a white china plate suspended 8" above the can to gather the soot / particulates. the whole thing placed in the middle of the Webber BBQ.



Then mixture consisted of 50 drops of # 2 diesel + 1 drop of the target additive, shaken not stirred in a glass test tube, then dumped into a fresh clean beer can, and ignited with the propane torch and allowed to burn to extinction.



I timed the length of the burn, and analyzed the quantity of smoke & residual soot visually.



Non-conclusive test results: they all smoked, straight #2 diesel being the cleanest, 2 stroke oil mixture the worst; they all left considerable residual carbon on the plate and in the can; again 2 stroke oil the worst, 2 stoke oil also left some un-burned goo behind, still kinda oily; and the MMO mix burned the longest by about 10%, with more soot than the motor oil but less than 2 stroke oil.



Conclusions: None; but based on what I saw with my own eyes, it would appear that rotella might give some extra lubricity and burn pretty clean; MMO may in fact have some potential for extra lubricity + some slight milaage gains (??); 2 stroke petro oil seems to burn the dirtiest and leave some unburned goo behind (who knows what it's impact might be on the valves, exaust tract / turbo, and motor lube oil, etc . ??)

Don't forget the John Deere additive. That's what I use. $5 per 104 gallons treated. Has just about the same properties as one of the "name" brands.



I don't notice much difference--just feel better about my lift pump, which is to be moved.

THE RESULTS:



These results are listed in the order of performance in the HFRR test. The baseline fuel used in every test started at an HFRR score of 636. The score shown is the tested HFRR score of the baseline fuel/additive blend.

Also included is the wear scar improvement provided by the additive as well as other claimed benefits of the additive. Each additive is also categorized as a Multi-purpose additive, Multi-purpose + anti-gel, Lubricity only, non-conventional, or as an additive capable of treating both gasoline and diesel fuel.

As a convenience to the reader there is also information on price per treated tank of diesel fuel (using a 26 gallon tank), and dosage per 26 gallon tank provided as “ounces of additive per 26 gallon tank”.

CONCLUSIONS:



Products 1 through 4 were able to improve the unadditized fuel to an HFRR score of 460 or better. This meets the most strict requirements requested by the Engine Manufacturers Association.

Products 1 through 9 were able to improve the unadditized fuel to an HFRR score of 520 or better, meeting the U. S. diesel fuel requirements for maximum wear scar in a commercially available diesel fuel.

Products 16 through 19 were found to cause the fuel/additive blend to perform worse than the baseline fuel. The cause for this is speculative. This is not unprecedented in HFRR testing and can be caused by alcohol or other components in the additives. Further investigation into the possibilities behind these poor results will investigated.

Any additive testing within +/- 20 microns of the baseline fuel could be considered to have no significant change. The repeatability of this test allows for a +/- 20 micron variability to be considered insignificant.

Larry Quinn, Mike Vonada, Chad Sheets. . . familiar names from the good old days.

Obviously this thread predates the additive testing by several years, Larry Quinn started this thread over 8-1/2 years ago.

Thanks for the genuine certified official looking numerical conclusions. I've been guilty of dumping a bottle of cooking oil in the tank in warm weather. Have to get some genuine bio or one of the top picks from this data.



And now I'm 100% 12-valves. ;)
 
I have posted several times about mmo. I have used it since new along with Howes meaner. Lots of people say it doesnt work and will damage the injection pump etc. I now have 487,000kms on odometer,original vp-44,original injectors. I have no idea if this is because of the addatives or not,however since my vp-44 and injectors have lasted so long I will continue to use it. As an aircraft Maintenance Engineer we have use it in radial engines to free sticking valves and rough running with good results. My truck runs as good or better today than when new. Uses no oil between changes (6000k) Rotella 15w40 fleetguard filters. Fuel filters changed at 10,000 k. Works for me.

I read your post and decided to respond due to the fact I have been using MMO since the 60's. My dad and uncle used MMO and I just continued to this day. It was developed in the 30's to increase fuel quality proprieties. I have used MMO in my Perkins and Detroit diesels vehicles. MMO improved mileage and provided for a top cyclinder lub.

I have used MMO in Alaska, Oregon, Wash, Utah and Colorado in the winter and summer month's. It is not a snake oil, due to it's longivity in the marget place and anyone I suggested to "just use-try it" always said thanks - it works. Better mileage and smoother running engine.

Hi Guys

I have been using mmo for years. My neighbor watched me pour in some mmo and asked why I did that. I told him I liked the benefits of higher mileage and top cyclinder lubricant benefits it provided, so not knowing and not pushing it off on anyone, a week later he told me he had used it on a long trip to Pheonix and the change in engine noise and mileage was noticeable, a benefit. Now I looked around, and my whloe neighbor hood is using the stuff.

Fuel Additive

Here's mine. over 600k before doing a pump overhaul caused by worn gaskets seeping. Internals all good no signs of wear at this miliage. I never fail to add fuel additive when doing a fillup, most of the time that has been Lucas in summer and Howes in winter. Some big trucks have used mystery well over a million miles. I have not tried it. :)
