I have been using Marvel Mystery Oil as prescribed on the bottle, in my diesel fuel only, for about 3k miles, thinking that it might add a little extra lubrication for the infamous lift pump and the VP44. Whats the opinion of the many experts out there? Am I just throwing away $2. 50 a bottle or is it doing what they advertise it to do? If you read the info on the bottle it says that it is the next best thing to to sliced bread for our problems. I talked to a Cummins tech and he said that this stuff has been around forever and that he has never heard of any body complaining about any problems from it so maybe it can't hurt at best? Hit me! I'm listening. Thanks in advance. :)

Some small aircraft (Cessna etc) mechanics I know swear by it. They put it in the fuel to keep engines clean and extra lubrication. They claim it eliminates carbon buildup on the pistons and heads. If you tear one down, they say the pistons and valves are shiny clean. So I burn it in my other machines... IH Cub Cadets. So I dont know how much good it does for VP44's but it probably cant hurt them.

The stuff's made for burning, so I can't believe it would do any damage whatsoever. Would it provide any more lubrication than straight #2? That one I haven't a clue on.

The only time I'm really worried about fuel lubricity (aside from water in fuel issues) is when the stations up here switch over to #1 blend. That's when I start adding stuff. I really wonder if straight #2 needs anything added to it (speaking only about lubricity).

Mystery oil

Aircraft fuel is blended different than auto fuel to prevent carbon build-up. Diesel fuel is going to create some carbon , as seen in the tail pipe.

Jimp:

Everyone may think I have had a few to many, but my truck gets between one and two more miles to the gallon while running Marvel in the tank. I have done numerous tests and it always comes out the same so I put it in there on every tank full. Don't know what exactly is in the Mystery Oil but my truck seems to like it.

I've been running it in mine too. I put about 15 oz give or take in the tank.

Seems to run smoother... in my opinion.

As for the red dye, I had it in my tank when I pulled it, and the fuel still looked yellow. It's a non issue.

I have done it in the past winters. . You would have to add a ton of it to get the diesel fuel a red tint. :--)

I've been using MMO in my fuel for 30,000 miles. Lubricity is the reason, dont know how effective it is.

It was suggested to me to use synthetic two-cycle engine oil in small quantities, anyone try that?

I use MMO every other fill up. When I was having trouble with my lift pump, I put in a pint and the pressure came right back. So I have using ever since. I did eventually lose the lift pump and I blame it on crappy fuel.

Me Too

I used to use it all the time then got started using Power service's additives. I think I will go back to using MMO also! Seemed to make the truck more quite at idle! I agree it never had enough red in it to affect 30 plus gallons of diesel.

I also have been using Marvel Mystery sence day one. I have 34k and had the lift pump checked about 5 weeks ago. The tech remarked that he was suprised to see 15 psi at idle and 9 psi at WOT. I mentioned MMO and he replied "Oh that explains it". I inquired as to his meaning... his reply was if this lift pump was OE than the specs in his opinion spoke for the add lube added to the fuel.

I add 8 oz. at each fillup. I created a little red plastic tool box with 8 each small plastic bottles that allow clean quick additions with no spills or smelly hands. It's like a little lunch box for your truck packed with li'll bottles of booz:D

From an old thread...

I emailed MMO a couple of years ago about the possibility of getting fined for Red fuel on highway.

Thank you for your interest and your question regarding Marvel Mystery Oil. You and the rest of your members can continue to use Marvel Mystery Oil in your diesel fuel. First, at the recommended ratio, Marvel Mystery Oil will not change the color of the diesel fuel because it is to dilute. Secondly, the government regulation that concerns dyeing off-road diesel fuel red, specifies both the concentration and the exact red dye to use. Marvel Mystery contains neither the specified red dye nor is it present in sufficient quantity.

We appreciate your continued use of Marvel Mystery Oil. If we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.

Sincerely,

Marvel Oil Company, Inc.

I never used MMO until a couple months ago, figured it was just another snake oil. A co-worker has an old beater Subaru that you could hear coming from two miles away (sticking lifters?) Substituted a qt of motor oil for a qt of MMO, thing purrs like a sewing machine now. I don't think I'll ever use it in any way on my Cummins but it seems to have it's applications.

It's a shame we have to be so paranoid about these injector pumps! :(

I've been using Power Service additive since I bought the new truck (in my old '91 as well!) - and after reading some of these threads, decided to also try a no-ash synthetic 2-cycle oil - I found Pennzoil has one available at Walmart for under $20 a gallon, and am currently adding one pint to each tank of fuel... Probably overkill - and I may adjust the percentage downward slightly - but with the added Comp module and lack of DC warranty, seems like good insurance, until proven otherwise.

Sure would be great if we could get some reliable, expert and independent data on what some of these snakeoils will REALLY do for us, other than make us poorer!

Re: Mystery oil

I have used Stanadyne & MMO every fill up since new,3 yrs and

30K. Runs great & no problems. Get it for $9. + per 1/2 Gal. at Checkers.

MMO - the panacea for what ails ya'

I have used MMO in just about every kind of internal combustion engine - either in the oil or in the fuel. As far as I can tell there has never been an adverse affect associated with its use - at least in my applications over the last 25 years.

I hadn't thought about using it in my truck till now. Used it in tractors back during my days on the farm so this little memory jog is appreciated.

Never looked into exactly what it consists of but I have a sneaky feeling it is not much different from kerosene, just has some lubricating additives and that wonderful red dye added.

Since the rest of my stocks have dived, maybe I will by some MMO parent company stock since the word is now out that it can be used in our trucks.

Should we tell the Furd and Cheby guys or keep it our secret?

MMO back in the tank again

I couldn't wait to get it and put some in the tank. I forgot how cheap it is, $2. 96 at Walmart.

Used per directions at 4. 0 oz per ten gallons that is roughly about $1. 00 per fillup. I don't know if my ears heard it right, but I poured it in with the truck idleing, and it sure seemed to quiten down in a few minutes!!!! I think I will go back to using it instead of the power service stuff.

I am after the lubricity mostly.

After all the positive comments here about MMO I've decided to give it a try too. The half gallon jug was less than $10 at Walmart, 4 ounces treat 10 gallons.

I also bought 2 16 ounce bottles of MMO, they are just the right size to slip in the door pocket on the drivers side. All I have to do is replenish what I use from the half gallon "stash".

I haven't noticed any difference in sound or drivability yet. The motor just rolled over 1500 miles so she's still got a ways to go on the break-in.

I've been shifting at around 2800 to 2900 rpm whenever I can. Should I keep this up during the break-in? I've read that this motor likes to be pushed, I just don't want to be screwing it up. I don't have anything to tow right now so it's the closest I can get to making the motor work.
