With my '05 3G I was pulling a 6% grade today and grossing 23,300 lbs I saw the EGT touch 1250 for just a moment. Most of the time it was running 1150-1200. I suppose running on level 2, WOT, and 60 MPH didn't help.

Am I correct that 1250 is about the max safe pre-turbo EGT for 3-G's?

I think you were actually pretty safe at 1250 still. That is getting up to the point where backing out would be a good idea but 1400 is not unheard of on a "600" cummins. I suspect the rpms were up there pulling the load on the grade. That keep the turbo moving air and keeps egts down. I think guys get in more trouble with manual transmissions when they do not drop a gear, when they should. The auto does it for you. I grossed 23,900 coming through the rockies on I-70. I was pushing it pretty hard and post turbo never went over 1000, mostly it hung around 900 which is probably close to where you were running. My truck is stock, so your numbers look pretty good really considering the power adder :)

I would not sweat 1200-1300, but would consider backing out at that point. When your towing it should not be a "drag race" to the top of the hill or a time to test the limits of your truck or towing equipment and darwin. Empty I get my truck to 1300-1400+ almost daily, 18+ mpg regularly, 37K miles YTD and everything runs great and is as tight as a drum. I've heard that the turbo and internals will start to break down or weld themselves anymore than a few seconds into the 1500 range. Knowing that I back out around 1450 just to be safe as a rule ;)

I have a completely stock 2005 QC LB 4X4 with the G56. I tow a 32' fifth wheel (apx 12K loaded) and I hit 1250 (pre-turbo) on steep grades all the time. I don't think you are anywhere close to damaging the engine at this temperature. Now if you kept it at 1250 all day...

On my stock '05 temps will stay 1200 or less towing and full throttle until I hit 2200 RPM or so and then I can easily hit 1350. I'm not sure why that is, maybe exhaust becomes restrictive or the turbo starts to get near its efficiency limits. Hopefully a little timming will reduce it... have to try next time I tow.
