Maximum number of private messages?

I am curious as to what the maximum number of private messages that can be save is? I often like to save the messages to remind me what topics have been discussed with the various members, but seem to recall that at around 40, the mailbox becomes full? I try to delete the less important ones, but even so, they tend to accumulate. Is there a difference if I move the messages to the "saved" folder? Thanks,
